As a lifelong fan of gritty, noir-inspired stories and a devoted viewer of The Penguin, I must say that the finale left me with a profound sense of satisfaction. Oswald Cobblepot’s true nature was laid bare for all to see, and it was an undeniable testament to the skillful storytelling of the showrunners and cast.
The TV series “The Penguin” is being celebrated as one of the top shows this year, with its final episode receiving widespread acclaim as a fitting conclusion. (SPOILER ALERT) The eighth episode of “The Penguin” made it clear to viewers that Oswald Cobblepot, portrayed by Colin Farrell, is indeed a sociopath, devoid of genuine love and affection. Yet, there’s a scene that showrunner Lauren LeFranc and director Jennifer Getzinger decided not to include in the episode might have altered viewers’ opinions about this…
Colin Farrell Reveals The Penguin Finale’s Deleted Scene
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been thrilled to see Colin Farrell and the exceptional cast of “The Penguin” gracing various media outlets since the finale episode hit our screens. During an engaging conversation with Cinemablend, Farrell shared some intriguing insights about Episode 8, revealing that it featured a critical scene that added depth to the narrative.
In the eight episode, there’s a moment when a child asks, “Aren’t you the Penguin?”, and later mentions something about his mother. At the end of the scene, I respond, “Tell your mom that The Penguin looks after his own.
The reason for omitting this particular scene from Episode 8 of “The Penguin” becomes quite clear – it contradicted the overarching theme of the episode. Titled “A Great or Little Thing,” the episode focused on exposing deception, peeling back layers to reveal the truth. In this instance, Oz’s mask refusing to fall off despite his mother’s distress and his mob rival having his brother in a dangerous predicament was pivotal. By the end of the episode, Oz’s true evil was laid bare: he mercilessly killed his associate Victor, kept his mother confined in a vegetative state against her will, forced his girlfriend to dress up as his mom to cater to his ego, and incited all gang lieutenants in Gotham to betray their bosses and follow him instead.
As a devoted fan, I found myself pondering over the final scene in “The Penguin” painting an unforgettable image of the conflict within the character. It might have been challenging for some viewers to perceive Oz attempting to project a heroic image towards a child, especially when he donned the signature suit and top hat of the Penguin. Dropping The Penguin’s name in that context could have felt overly explicit, particularly during the scene where Oz stepped out wearing the iconic outfit. Given the show’s well-deserved reputation as a gritty mob drama, introducing an element reminiscent of comic book tropes might have seemed out of place and altered the overall tone.
The Penguin is now streaming on Max.
