As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast, I must admit that the twist in “The Platform 2” left me utterly bewildered. It feels like the creators took the narrative time machine and went on a wild ride through the Pit’s timeline.
After much anticipation, the eagerly-awaited follow-up to 2020’s popular streaming hit “The Platform” was released on Netflix this past weekend, transporting horror enthusiasts once more into the spine-tingling confines of the Pit – the haunting prison experiment. In contrast to the initial cast, this sequel introduces a fresh set of characters residing in the penitentiary, seemingly unrelated to Goreng, Trimagasi, Miharu, and their comrades from the first movie. However, as we know, nothing within the Pit is ever completely what it seems, and “The Platform 2” deftly wove in the main characters from its predecessor, connecting the two stories to create a continuous narrative. Regrettably, the method by which these characters reappeared feels somewhat confusing.
Attention Reader: This article reveals crucial plot points from The Platform 2. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
In the sequel titled “The Platform 2“, the narrative appears to unfold subsequent to the initial movie, introducing a revised penal structure inspired by Goreng’s personal journey. The inmates now adhere to stringent regulations where they are limited to consuming only the meal chosen upon entering the Pit. A faction known as “loyalists” maintains communication across the levels, ensuring rule compliance and sustenance for all. Characters Perempu?n and Zamiatin seamlessly fit within this system; however, it doesn’t take long before they come across figures reminiscent of characters seen in the original film.
In “The Platform 2,” Goreng’s tale appears to play a significant role, giving rise to a religious-like belief system based on rules, reminiscent of the Master’s journey through the levels. However, this seems to be the only substantial link to the initial film. That connection deepens following Zamiatin’s demise and Perempu?n receiving a new companion: Trimagasi.
In case you remember, Trimagasi met his end in the movie titled “The Platform“. His life was taken by Goreng, who consumed some of his body to survive. Later on in the film, Trimagasi reappeared as a hallucination experienced by Goreng. This phenomenon was explained by the fact that Goreng had visions of anyone he ate while he was in the Pit.
In the movie “The Platform 2”, Trimagasi doesn’t appear as a figment of Perempu’n’s imagination, but rather as a tangible character who interacts with others throughout the film. This suggests that the chronology we understood from the first “The Platform” has been reversed. In this new storyline, Trimagasi and Perempu?n were assigned to level 72 initially, which is where Trimagasi informed Goreng he had started when he entered the prison nine months before their encounter. Therefore, “The Platform 2” is a prequel, not a sequel, and its narrative doesn’t revolve around Goreng.
In that situation, things become somewhat clearer until we reach the finale. After watching a series of puzzling scenes featuring kids playing on a pyramid, one child is chosen by Miharu (a recurring character from the initial film) to be transported to level 333. The storyline grows increasingly perplexing, as Perempu?n rescues that child from level 333 and helps them reach the summit, similar to how Goreng reached the top at the end of the first movie. This leaves Miharu at the bottom of the Pit with a group of dying individuals, and she begins experiencing visions of her deceased cellmates.
In the story, Perempu not only experiences a vision of Goreng on multiple occasions, but this encounter sparks numerous unanswered questions. Towards the end, after Perempu remains in the pit and appears to submit to her fate, the final scene from “The Platform” is depicted: Goreng sends the little girl back up through the levels. Here, he encounters Trimagasi and his late cellmate informs him that the girl “is the message.” When Goreng looks around, he finds Perempu, who seems to recognize him as if they’ve already met. They embrace as the movie concludes.
It appears that neither of them seems to be experiencing a vision about a deceased person from their past, given their mutual shock upon encountering each other at the bottom of this pit. Instead, it seems as if they might be sharing each other’s visions, and Perempu?n doesn’t appear to be someone who has languished and perished at the bottom of the pit for an entire year.
Could it be that the base of this Pit transcends the boundaries of time and dimension? It seems reminiscent of an afterlife or some mysterious realm. The characters’ encounters, which don’t conform to the logic within The Platform 2, hint at this possibility. While it appears everything in these films is carefully planned, deciphering the underlying message might be a challenge due to its abstract nature, making it less likely for viewers to ponder on it deeply.
