The Platform 2 ending explained: How is Netflix’s sequel connected to the original?

As a long-time aficionado of gritty dystopian narratives and a connoisseur of movies that leave me questioning humanity’s inherent nature, The Platform is right up my alley. The twist at the end of The Platform 2, revealing it as a prequel rather than a sequel, was a masterstroke that left me utterly intrigued. It’s like watching a Möbius strip of human survival and cannibalism – you keep going around, but the scene is always changing!

“Netflix’s movie ‘The Platform’ has been one of their most popular films, which speaks volumes about us. This Spanish dystopian thriller, along with its sequel released recently, is quite disturbing, as you might expect.

Similar to Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s debut movie, titled “The Platform,” the second film unfolds within a detention center called The Pit. This Pit houses a single platform stocked with food that moves down from the highest level daily, distributing sustenance to the inmates residing on each floor.

In principle, there’s enough food for each prisoner on every level, but this is only possible if it’s distributed equally. If not, by the time the platform reaches the bottom, all the food will be gone, leaving those at the bottom needing an alternative source of sustenance. This alternative source, in essence, would be one another.

In this situation, there’s a new system established to guarantee equal distribution of resources. Overstepping your allotted portion could result in confrontation with certain individuals, referred to as the Anointed Ones, who mete out punishment for rule-breakers in various ways.

On the second level of the facility, two new inmates, Perempuán and Zamiatin, find themselves. They’re fortunate to be assigned to room 24. Here, they discover the regulations that have been instituted by an enigmatic individual called the Master.

Ultimately, things take a turn for the worst, and the manner and reason behind this transformation will leave you astounded and unsettled.

Following Zamiatin’s suicide, Perempuán’s new cellmate shares an escape plan, yet before they could put it into action, she was brutally killed by a merciless figure called Dagin Babi, who was among the Anointed Ones.

It turns out that there’s a special item somewhere in the prison that can be ingested to prevent you from falling asleep when the gas knocks everyone out at the end of the month during the prison’s reset.

After a rebellion, Perempuán discovers the unique material on a lower floor and conceals herself, resorting to cannibalism among the prisoners as she bides her time until the month passes and The Interval commences.

Despite numerous lives perishing around her, Perempuán manages to endure until the point when gas renders everyone else unconscious – except for her.

At the Pit, workers are arriving to retrieve deceased individuals and prepare for fresh arrivals. However, Perempuán notices a child forgotten by one of the guards on the 333rd level. Instead of fleeing, Perempuán acts selflessly and assists the boy.

In unison, they make their way down to the depths of the Abyss, encountering a cluster of individuals already there. A woman confides in Perempuán that it’s only the children who can climb back up, signifying an end to her voyage. Yet, there is still a chance for the boy to continue his journey. Thus, The Platform 2 concludes with a melancholic yet optimistic tone.

Let’s make it clear that Perempuán most likely perished. Despite her valiant attempt to rescue the child, she sustained heavy blood loss due to her head repeatedly colliding with the hard concrete edges. And the gathering expecting her? Regrettably, they are all characters who met their end.

That’s not all, either.

After the credits roll, we revisit the Pit where a platform repeatedly descends three times, carrying an adult and a child in separate instances. Suddenly, a fourth set of characters make an appearance, likely to be recognized by viewers who watched the initial movie.

Absolutely correct! You may have forgotten since 2020 has been quite confusing, but let me refresh your memory: Goreng was indeed the main character in the initial film. At the end of our encounter with him, there was some uncertainty as to whether he had passed away or not.

Perempuán suddenly shows up, and she actually recognises Goreng. “You, what are you doing here?” she asks. The pair hug it out, and then the movie ends for real with them both in each other’s arms

In essence, it turns out that Platform 2 wasn’t following up on a sequel as initially thought. Instead, it’s set before the events of the original movie. This revelation comes from the fact that the post-credits scene is actually a continuation of a moment we had witnessed earlier in the first film.

However, the information provided doesn’t explicitly confirm their relationship status, but it strongly suggests that they were or might have been in a romantic relationship at some point.

Previously, Perempuan recounted a tragic incident at an exhibit where her boyfriend’s child met a fatal accident. He slipped and one of the rotating blades pierced his eye.

Might it be possible that Goreng’s personal tragedy prompted him to enlist in The Pit? This aspect isn’t discussed in the initial film, where he seemed to be motivated by a desire to quit smoking and read Don Quixote. However, such a profound loss could indeed push someone towards questionable choices like this one.

And don’t forget Trimagasi, another key connection between the two films.

In the initial film of “The Platform,” Trimagasi shares a cell with Goreng. It’s evident that he has spent a considerable amount of time there. Contrastingly, in “The Platform 2,” Trimagasi is a new inmate alongside Perempuán, and unfortunately for Perempuán, Trimagasi shows a strong inclination towards cannibalism.

Initially, there’s Miharu, who appears somewhat compassionate in the first movie but is on a ruthless quest seeking her supposed daughter. Later, she befriends Goreng only to be fatally struck down by a rebellious prisoner. However, the Miharu encountered in The Platform 2’s prequel presents a stark contrast.

In this scene, Miharu and an enigmatic individual walk into a room where kids are playing. They select a boy, who later becomes the one that Perempuán saves, without so much as glancing at Mari, the child we thought was Miharu’s daughter.

The room holds an enigma as well. What brings these children here and why are they confined at the bottommost tier of the Pit? Are they intended to gauge survivors like Perempuán, on the brink of fleeing? Or could their presence be symbolic, hinting that we’re all fundamentally primitive beings who instinctively prioritize survival over everything else?

It seems that Miharu might be connected to the Administration, but there’s still a chance we could uncover more about her true identity if a third Platform film is made.

It’s uncertain if we’ve identified the Master or not, nor do we know whether they are still alive. If a third movie comes out with these unanswered questions, it will be confusing. The mystery surrounding their identity is unsettling in its own right too.

The Platform 2 is streaming on Netflix now – sign up from £4.99 a month. Netflix is also available on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.
