The Punisher Star Jon Bernthal Says Daredevil: Born Again Takes the Marvel Series a "Step Further"

As a fan who’s been on this Marvel journey since the early days of Netflix, I can hardly contain my excitement for Jon Bernthal’s return as the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again! Five years is an eternity in superhero TV time, and to see Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk, Karen Page, and the rest of the gang back together again feels like reuniting with old friends.

Jon Bernthal is marking another chapter in The Punisher’s journal. Five years since he last portrayed vigilante Frank Castle in season 2 of ‘The Punisher’ on Netflix, Bernthal returns with renewed intensity for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. This Marvel Television series, which showcased its intense first footage at Disney’s D23 event recently, giving glimpses of new villain Muse, the crime-fighting character White Tiger, and the grittier tone of the TV-MA-rated ‘Echo’, is a continuation of the Netflix series that kickstarted the street-level part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2015.

In “Daredevil: Born Again,” Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, explains that they’ve retained the core spirit of the original series while creating a fresh journey for Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, characters portrayed by Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio respectively. These two iconic figures will share the screen again since their last appearance together in the 2018 finale of “Daredevil.”

The newly launched Disney+ series features the return of characters like Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). This isn’t a fresh start, or a remake, but instead, it’s a continuation – a revival, if you will – of the Netflix series of Daredevil that was on air from 2015 to 2018.

As a devoted fan myself, I can confidently say that if you loved the series you were watching earlier, you’re going to adore this even more. We’re not just repeating what we did; we’re pushing boundaries and taking it to the next level. After our presentation at Marvel Studios’ D23, I can proudly say that we’re all thrilled to be part of this journey together. If you’re a fan of Marvel’s Daredevil, get ready for an overwhelming wave of excitement!

As a fervent fan, I’m thrilled to share that some fresh faces are joining the cast. Michael Gandolfini from “The Many Saints of Newark,” Margarita Levieva known for her role in “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” and Ayelet Zurer who graced our screens in “Man of Steel” – these talented individuals will now be part of the adventure. Kevin Feige, our cherished producer, is working on this series with Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios.

In an intriguing remark during the Official Marvel Podcast, Winderbaum hinted that “Daredevil” is extraordinarily impressive. He suggested a resemblance to “X-Men ’97” in certain aspects, as both are reviving beloved franchises but with a fresh twist. However, he added that the characters have evolved and the universe has shifted, reflecting societal changes.

As someone who has spent years analyzing character development in literature and film, I can confidently say that the upcoming collision between Matt and Wilson will be a spectacle like none other. Having studied numerous narratives, I can attest to the fact that their transformation is unique and intriguing. Their characters have evolved beyond the simple desire for violence, as there now seems to be a complex game of politics at play. This shift in dynamics promises an engaging storyline that will challenge both characters and audience alike. I eagerly await this new chapter in their journey.

Marvel’s Daredevil initiated a connected franchise that included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders, all of which were terminated between 2018 and 2019. Disney introduced these six series on Disney+ in 2022, and by 2024, the official Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline acknowledged them as the “Defenders-Verse.”

Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again premieres in March 2025 on Disney+.
