As an old-timer JRPG fan who missed out on Suikoden in the ’90s but has since made amends, I can barely contain my excitement for next year’s release of Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars.

2025, on the 27th of August, Konami unexpectedly made an appearance during Nintendo’s August Direct broadcast to reveal a fresh trailer for the up-and-coming Xbox version of Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars.

This game is a collection of the initial two installments from Konami’s Suikoden series. It is set to be launched on March 6, 2025, and will be available for purchase on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and personal computers (PC).

If you’re unfamiliar with Suikoden, it’s a collection of role-playing games (RPGs) with turn-based combat that were initially released on the PlayStation One in the 1990s, created and distributed by Konami. Although it didn’t reach the same level of popularity as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest from Square Enix during its time, Suikoden has developed a dedicated fanbase over the years.

Suikoden games are widely recognized for their gripping narratives that encompass themes like friendship, family, power struggles, and the grim realities of war. These games also garner fame due to their feature where players can assemble more than a hundred playable characters in each game, creating armies and fortresses to confront tyrannical empires during tactical strategy battles in mini-games, and forming teams of six to face off against formidable bosses using classic turn-based RPG combat.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming HD Remaster Collection for Suikoden I & II, titled Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. This collection is a stunning revamp of the first two games in the series – Suikoden I: Gate Rune and Suikoden II: Dunan Unification. For gamers like me who are eagerly awaiting its release on Xbox and PC, this title promises an enhanced experience with updated graphics, sound, and user-friendly improvements tailored for modern generations.

The following improvements that Suikoden 1 and 2 will receive in this HD remaster collection are:

  • All background illustrations will be remade in HD.
  • More detailed pixel art animation.
  • The environments will feature improved lighting, shadow textures, smoke effects, and other atmospheric effects.
  • The sound design during battle and exploration has been enhanced.
  • Character portraits have been redrawn with new HD portraits.
  • Auto-Save.
  • Conversation Logs to help remind players of past events in the story.
  • Auto-battle in case you want the AI to control your characters during battle.
  • A Battle Fast Forward option to help speed up the pacing of battles.

Now accepting pre-orders for the HD Remaster of Suikoden I & II! Pre-ordering these games right now comes with a unique advantage – you’ll receive exclusive in-game items to give you an edge when starting either game.

These pre-order bonus items are:

  • 57,300 potch (in-game currency)

  • 1x Prosperity Orb

I can’t wait to experience the Suikoden series for the first time when these remasters arrive next year

The release date for the upcoming remasters of two classic JRPGs from the 1990s has been revealed

Being a dedicated fan of JRPGs since my youth in the 1990s, I must confess that I overlooked the Suikoden games as they were released. I didn’t learn about them until later on in life, and during those days, I was deeply engrossed in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy and Capcom’s Breath of Fire series. However, I recently had the opportunity to review Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, a spiritual successor to Suikoden, for Xbox consoles.

Despite some challenges in rhythm and fine-tuning certain aspects, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes proved to be a charming indie JRPG, offering an immersive narrative, a multitude of intriguing characters to tailor your team from, and a tactical battle system that encouraged smart party configurations and skillful application of abilities.

If the enjoyable gameplay style similar to what I enjoyed in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which was reminiscent of its inspiring series, is what I can anticipate from Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars upon its release next year, then I’m eagerly looking forward to playing it.
