In the second season of “The Rig,” the team aboard the Kinloch Bravo finds themselves once again on duty, and the adversary they face is now more distinct than ever.
After a catastrophic tsunami at the close of season 1, everyone yearns to rejoin their families. However, Pictor is trying to hide their involvement in the disaster, moving the surviving crew members to a state-of-the-art facility known as the Stac, nestled within the unforgiving terrain of the Arctic.
Now on Pictor’s territory, the team finds themselves confronted by moral dilemmas, overwhelming anxieties about family at home, and solely focused on staying alive as they continue to puzzle over the enigma that is the Ancestor.
In contrast to its first season, the program has significantly expanded in every aspect this time around. The team finds themselves in larger and riskier settings, venturing into a wider variety of locations, and encountering fresh characters right from the start – a change that generally proves effective.
Initially, events unfold robustly as the team endeavors to adapt to their novel surroundings and uncover secrets about the enigmatic Ancestor.
The most memorable scenes occur at the beginning and during tense, potentially dangerous situations, demonstrating that the series doesn’t shy away from surprising – or hurting – its beloved characters. An instance of this happens in episode 1, featuring Abraham Popoola as Easter and Ross Anderson as Cameron.
Among all the episodes, I must say that the third one stands out for me, particularly due to the brilliant work of both Anderson and Mark Addy. In this episode, Mark reprises his role as David Coake, the representative from Pictor, who’s clearly enjoying the fact that the Kinloch Bravo crew has found themselves on his territory.
As the second half of the season progresses, the series seems to deviate slightly from its original path. It appears that the story could have been better structured across four episodes instead of six. The tone becomes somewhat inconsistent again, giving an impression that it’s still searching for its unique identity, despite being two seasons into the run.
As a film enthusiast, I find myself disappointed with the recent developments in the show. Particularly, Emily Hampshire’s character, Rose, seemed to veer off course at a pivotal moment, making the storyline feel more like a letdown than a thrilling turn of events. This shift in narrative took away any sense of peril or tension that had been building up.
In the newly formed ensemble, Anderson stood out, fitting perfectly into the mix while also getting a chance to excel. Notable newcomers like Alice Krige, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Phil McKee, and Johannes Roaldsen were added, taking on important roles within Pictor.
In the meantime, the rest of the characters are given diverse storylines. Rochenda Sandall continues to shine as the team’s medic, who is now searching for her missing wife following the tsunami, after disclosing that she’s pregnant. The actress delivers a remarkable performance in every scene assigned to her. Conversely, Iain Glen’s character, Magnus, seems to be underutilized.
Even with its imperfections, watching The Rig’s second season remains a rewarding experience. It’s even more stunning visually compared to the first season, taking us through the bleak beauty of the Arctic, the confined yet expansive Stac, and the UK grappling with the aftermath of the tsunami’s impact.
It’s also impossible not to be reminded of the importance of the show in terms of its depiction of the climate crisis. Season 2 is perhaps even more relentless in getting this message across – but also not sacrificing entertainment to do so.
The narrative carries a compelling tone that’s neither overly didactic nor soft, effectively portraying the harm humans have inflicted upon our planet. Yet, it also offers uplifting instances, underscoring the potential for growth, education, and improvement.
