When BJ endured his distressing pole-dancing mishap on The Righteous Gemstones, I worried that the HBO show was transforming my beloved character in a negative way. However, Beej didn’t stay low for long, thanks to the amazing assistance of his service monkey, Dr. Watson. To put any doubts to rest about actor Tim Baltz employing deception, the performer revealed he collaborated with an authentic trained capuchin during Season 4, and shared some amusing tales about the oddly unsettling actions of kissing and being fed by the monkey.
Anticipation builds as fans eagerly await the conclusion of “The Righteous Gemstones,” airing on HBO or streamable for Max subscribers. Actor Tim Baltz recently chatted with TV Insider about his unique co-stars – capuchin monkeys named Allie and Katie, who alternated playing Dr. Watson. Baltz didn’t disclose which one he shared a kiss with during filming, but humorously detailed the encounter:
In simpler terms, kissing the monkey involved it pressing its tongue against mine, repeatedly and forcefully, mimicking a piercing or stabbing motion, similar to a tiny knife.
Initially, when Baltz joined the show, he probably didn’t anticipate sharing kisses with a monkey given his co-stars were Danny McBride and John Goodman. However, he shouldn’t be surprised if such scenes might occur in the future.
Despite some doubts, Baltz appeared to be a true professional throughout. One can’t help but wonder if he managed the kissing scene in a single take or needed several attempts. Plus, it’s hard to say how much practice went into it. Frankly, I’d probably crack up if kissed by a monkey, and I’m not even an actor!

In the end, Tim Baltz found his time with the capuchins enjoyable, but it wasn’t entirely risk-free. The actor from BJ shared that scenes involving Dr. Watson feeding him needed a caution from the animal trainer because the monkey was quite enthusiastic during the feeding sessions.
Whenever the monkey feeds me pretzels, it acts quite spontaneously and often tries to stuff them into my mouth. The trainer warns, “Be prepared to guard your mouth with your tongue because she might push it right down your throat, causing you to choke.” As predicted, she’d raise the pretzel towards me with one hand, then shove it in using the other. However, this playful monkey is simply mischievous and full of fun.
During the progression of the season, Dr. Watson’s humor became increasingly essential as the storyline grew more somber upon Michael Rooker’s arrival as Lori’s former spouse, Cobb Milsap. Cobb, in a chilling turn of events, abducted Eli Gemstone and Uncle Baby Billy, with plans to inflict unimaginable pain on them. However, luck was on their side when Corey intervened, ultimately rescuing them, albeit at the cost of having to take his father’s life.
I’d argue that it’s one of the bleakest primate-focused narratives I’ve encountered, but a thorough analysis of “The Monkey” is sure to challenge that perception.

Unfortunately, it became necessary for Dr. Watson to leave, as Judy Gemstone managed to persuade her husband that it would be more beneficial for him to assist someone else after BJ recovered from being unable to walk. In truth, there was tension between Judy and the ape, and the capuchin monkey tried to throw a hairdryer into the tub where she was bathing.
At the moment, it’s uncertain if Dr. Watson will feature in the last episode of The Righteous Gemstones. I find it hard to accept that the show is wrapping up, and I’m eagerly searching for another comedy series on the 2025 TV lineup that could bring me similar delight. It’d be fantastic if Danny McBride started working on a new comedy show right away, as I don’t want to go too long without laughing as heartily as this one made me.
On Sunday, May 4th at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time, catch the final episode of the series “The Righteous Gemstones” on HBO. Find out how the religious family fares and what unexpected twists await the loyal viewers who’ve been with us throughout this journey.
