For the very first time, Amazon MGM Studios is planning to share some of its most popular original series with other streaming services and platforms. On Thursday, it was announced that “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and the spy-thriller “Citadel” would be among the initial shows made available through syndication. As reported by Variety, there is significant interest from various companies to air these programs, although none are currently streaming rivals of Amazon Prime Video in the Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) market. At this point, interest appears to be coming primarily from cable networks, especially those based overseas. Chris Ottinger, head of Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, stated that shows like these would not come cheap for third parties due to concerns about damaging the brand identity of the programs themselves.
Ottinger explained that due to the exceptional success of The Rings of Power, a premium product given its record-breaking premiere on Amazon Prime Video, they are aiming for premium pricing. If a partner intends to showcase it during a prime slot, such as Thursday at 8 p.m., Ottinger anticipates that a higher fee will be necessary.
To date, it appears that both ITV and BBC from the UK, as well as cable networks in Spain, Italy, Germany, and South America, have expressed interest in the two titles presented by Amazon MGM Studios at L.A. Screenings. This event is usually attended by cable and broadcast networks, but many of Prime Video’s rivals are present there through their parent companies – CBS instead of Paramount+, NBCUniversal instead of Peacock, Warner Bros. instead of HBO Max, and so forth.
It could be advantageous for “The Rings of Power” to air on a different platform than Prime Video, in certain aspects. Although it’s not connected to Peter Jackson’s film trilogies, which are set for a comeback with upcoming movies, “The Rings of Power” might attract casual viewers who aren’t aware of the difference if given the opportunity. This could potentially help it carve out its unique space within the fantasy genre.
1. “The Rings of Power and Citadel are both among Amazon’s costliest shows ever made, which seems consistent with the type of content they license. Following these, it’s expected that the spy-thriller Butterfly and action series Countdown will become available for syndication. Amazon plans to make these available after Prime Video has had exclusive access for 18 months each.”
2. “Amazon’s shows like The Rings of Power and Citadel have been among its priciest productions, which aligns with the content they license. In the coming months, the spy-thriller Butterfly and action series Countdown are expected to enter syndication. Amazon aims to debut these after Prime Video has held exclusive rights for 18 months.”
Currently airing is the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” with production for a third season already underway. In the United States, the series can currently be streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
