The Rings of Power: Daniel Weyman on Developing The Stranger Further in Season 2

As a seasoned gamer and die-hard Lord of the Rings fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the lore of Middle-earth, I am eagerly anticipating the premiere of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2. The mystery surrounding “The Stranger” was one of my favorite elements from the first season, and it’s intriguing to see how the story will unfold now that we know he is a member of the Istari.

In just a few days, the second season of “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will begin, and series actor Daniel Weyman is hinting at where the tale of “The Stranger” is heading next. The enigma surrounding “The Stranger” was a significant factor driving the storyline in Season 1, with viewers speculating about the character’s true identity, ranging from it being Sauron in disguise to resembling Gandalf the Grey, a noble wizard from Lord of the Rings. By the end of Season 1, no definitive answers were given, only that “The Stranger” belongs to the Istari – also known as “The Order of Wizards,” who were sent to Middle-earth by the Valar to counteract the menace of Sauron.

Discovering that The Stranger belongs to the Order of Magicians significantly narrows the possibilities regarding his true identity, since this order includes characters such as Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast (who appeared in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and/or The Hobbit film trilogies), along with lesser-known members like Alatar and Pallando, known as “Blue Wizards.”

The Rings of Power: Daniel Weyman on Developing The Stranger Further in Season 2

During a chat with ComicBook, actor Daniel Weyman hinted at the development in his portrayal of The Stranger, as he has recently rediscovered crucial insights about his own identity.

“[The performance] seems very consistent with the previous season,” Weyman pointed out. “I believe that what he experienced during Season 1 provided him with such a profound understanding of relationships. He learned so much from observing the Harfoots – about food, love, friendship, fear, and anger – all those different emotions. These lessons were mostly non-verbal in that case, but they were crucial. I think establishing these fundamentals correctly will prove beneficial for him in future seasons.”

According to J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore, the Amazon series “The Rings of Power” may use the character “The Stranger” as a prelude, offering insights into how Gandalf came to Middle-earth and developed his unique identity among his fellow Istari. The lore is not definitive on this matter, suggesting that Gandalf might have arrived during the Second Age, but his travels and early interactions with various races are not thoroughly chronicled. In simpler terms, it seems likely that “The Rings of Power” Season 2 will reveal “The Stranger’s” true identity as Gandalf and could establish his relationships with characters like Galadriel and the Elven Rings of Power.

In Season 2, he occasionally slips up, but he deeply regrets it. However, the narrative flow has always felt smooth and consistent to me, Weyman said. I’m quite satisfied with how Sharon Tal Yguado and the writers have crafted the storyline. It makes my work easier to transition from one season to another smoothly, I hope.
