The Rings of Power season 2 episode 5 airs heartbreaking death

As a cinephile with over three decades of immersion in Middle-earth lore, I must say that The Rings of Power season 2 has been nothing short of exhilarating. Yet, it’s not always the excitement we anticipate but rather the heart-wrenching moments that leave an indelible mark – like Valandil’s untimely demise in episode 5.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Rings of Power season 2 episode 5.

In the world of The Rings of Power, it seems no character is invincible, as tragically demonstrated during season 2, episode 5.

In the most recent edition, the tension in Numenor escalated significantly as Elendil (Lloyd Owen) clashed with the threatening son of Pharazon (Trystan Gravelle), named Kemen (Leon Wadham).

During a confrontation between Elendil and Kemen in the shrine, Valandil (Alex Tarrant) arrives to defend his captain. But things escalate and he ends up holding a sword to Kemen’s throat, clearly enraged enough to kill him.

In the end, Elendil successfully persuades Valandil to back off, only for Kemen to betray them both by stabbing Valandil in cold blood from behind. As Kemen does this, he orders the guards to seize Elendil and take him away.

It’s the most brutal death in season 2 so far, with fans heartbroken over the turn of events.

In the series The Rings of Power, the character Valandil was uniquely created. However, his demise opens up possibilities for this narrative to eventually align with the events of the Lord of the Rings lore in the future.

Currently, it’s believed by those around him that Isildur, Elendil’s son and a dear friend of Valandil, has perished. However, we are aware that he is still alive.

According to the storyline of The Lord of the Rings, Isildur, a character within this narrative, names his youngest son, who later becomes the third High King of Arnor, Valandil. Hence, in the potential events of the series, it appears reasonable that he might choose to name his son after his late childhood companion.

In Episode 5, Sauron continued to subtly control Celebrimbor, but it’s evident that Prince Durin has caught on to his machinations. He notices that the ring is altering King Durin in unexpected ways, hinting at its sinister influence.

Toward the close of the episode, Adar (Sam Hazeldine) proposes a partnership to Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). This potential alliance, which fans have speculated about, might be a strategic move aimed at uniting forces against their shared adversary, Sauron.
