The Running Man: Glen Powell Confirms Edgar Wright Movie Begins Filming Soon

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of both Stephen King’s novels and Edgar Wright’s films, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming adaptation of “The Running Man.” This project has been in the works for years, and finally, it seems that production is right around the corner.

After several years of development, a fresh film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man” is approaching. Directed by beloved filmmaker Edgar Wright, this new interpretation of King’s 1982 novel will feature Glen Powell from “Twisters” and “Top Gun: Maverick” in the leading role. Production is expected to start soon, as Powell shared in an interview with IndieWire that he plans to go back to the University of Texas this fall to complete his Spanish & Early American history degree while working on “The Running Man.”

Powell shared that he won’t be attending classes with other students on a consistent basis. Instead, he will be returning to school only to complete his remaining requirements and take proctored exams. He added that he will be filming “The Running Man” in London during the fall, so he’ll need to come back for those exams. The university is accommodating him with distance learning, allowing him to attend classes via Zoom. However, he’ll have to return a few times per semester for proctored exams. Edgar has been supportive of Powell finishing his degree amidst his busy movie production schedule.

What Is The Running Man Remake About?

In a dystopian society, “The Running Man” television show offers contestants a chance to win a large reward. To do so, they must avoid capture by law enforcement and hired hunters for an extended period. Should they succeed, they’ll reap the financial rewards, but their lives will be at risk for a month as relentless pursuers are given orders to shoot to kill. The 1987 film adaptation of this story, with Paul Michael Glaser directing and Arnold Schwarzenegger starring, loosely follows these events.

In a recent interview, Powell shared his excitement about collaborating with director Edgar Wright on a new project. He explained, “I was thrilled when I found an old email containing Wright’s name. Our script discussions have been enjoyable, and the world he’s creating is amazing. As huge fans of the Stephen King book we’re adapting, we both can’t wait to bring this character to life. I’ve always dreamed of working with Edgar Wright – he was my top pick when I moved to LA in 2008.”
