The Script star Danny O’Donoghue on playing without late bandmate Mark Sheehan: “I know he would push us on”

As a seasoned music aficionado who has witnessed the ebb and flow of countless bands throughout my years, I must say that The Script’s decision to press on after the tragic loss of their beloved bandmate, Mark Sheehan, is nothing short of commendable. It’s a testament to their resilience, their unwavering bond, and their deep-rooted commitment to the music they create together.

Danny O’Donoghue from the band ‘Script’ admitted that making the choice to carry on with the group following the demise of their bandmate, Mark Sheehan, was a challenging decision.

One of the original band members, the guitarist (alongside O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power), passed away last April after a brief period of illness.

Further members, Ben Sargeant and Ben Weaver, subsequently joined O’Donoghue, Power, and their band.

During an interview on The One Show about their latest album Satellites, which is their first since the passing of Sheehan, and upcoming global tour, O’Donoghue was questioned by host Alex Jones if it had been a challenging choice to continue with the band following Sheehan’s demise.

Indeed, receiving news like that is truly heart-wrenching. It makes one contemplate their entire existence, and as for me and Glen, we found ourselves pondering, ‘What would Mark do in this situation?’

He was the engine that propelled us forward, a highly charismatic individual who was the heart and soul of our group. His absence left us adrift in the early months after his departure. Rather than finding someone to fill his shoes, we decided to embark on a new journey. Instead of being a three-member band, we chose to expand to a four-piece.

He went on to say, “We reached out to our fans, as well as everyone else, to determine if this was the right course of action. Intuitively, it seemed that music has been a source of solace for me during every challenging period in my life, and I could hear Mark urging me: ‘Complete what we had begun together.’

Previously, O’Donoghue has been candid about his excessive drinking and smoking habits following Sheehan’s demise.

At the beginning of 2024, during an interview with Lorraine, he shared that he lost control and spiraled following Mark’s passing around Christmastime. Just like many people do, he turned to alcohol, cigarettes, and other vices to cope.

“I went on a mental block – I had a writers’ block for a long time last year.”

It wasn’t until he contemplated the lyric “a star shooting across the night” that he managed to overcome his creative block and start working on the band’s fresh music.

For the first time, I clearly expressed my thoughts regarding the situation, which unleashed a torrent of creativity in me.” (or) “It was the first occasion where I could clearly voice my thoughts about the situation, and since then, my creative flow has been abundant.”)

He stated, “I prefer to confront my sorrow completely sober.” He implied, “Otherwise, you’re merely postponing dealing with it.

16th August is when we’ll launch the satellites. After the album drops, our world tour starts; it kicks off in Cardiff on 18th November.
