Contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6.
Following an initially leisurely pace, the last and concluding season of The Handmaid’s Tale picked up speed as Mayday prepared to attack Gilead, an event that was imminent. However, this plan has now experienced a massive blow due to Nick’s unexpected act of treachery.
The objective was to take out several leaders when they were momentarily preoccupied at Jezebel’s, followed by an attack on the brothel itself. This would create a chaotic situation, which we would exploit by infiltrating during that chaos and working towards dismantling Gilead more extensively.
However, June promptly pointed out the flaws in their scheme, specifically questioning: How could they guarantee the survival of every woman trapped there, including Janine, upon their escape?
Prior to when June and Moira brought it up, there had been general agreement that if Janine and her group were to die, it would be a regrettable sacrifice, yet crucial for the regime’s ultimate downfall by one step.
However, June and Moira strongly disapproved of this outcome and chose to secretly enter Jezebel’s undercover as Marthas, in order to alert their friend about the impending danger. This would allow her to evacuate the women before the attack, with the ultimate goal of helping them escape Gilead entirely.
As a cinephile, I managed to come up with some vital details that could prove helpful for them – a map and intel on the security schedule.
Almost June had arrived, and it turned out that Moira wasn’t among those who made it outside. Instead, they were found in one of the uppermost rooms by a guard carrying a weapon.
Following the seizure of data gathered from Janine and its secure storage, he subsequently attempted to sexually assault Moira. However, with June present, they were able to subdue and ultimately end his life.
Or more concisely:
After securing the info taken from Janine in a safe, he went on to attack Moira. But thanks to June’s presence, they successfully overpowered and killed him.
After getting rid of the corpse, they hurriedly left, aided by Commander Lawrence – a character in the series known for his intricate depth and fascination.
But there was a problem. They needed the contents of that safe, which is where Nick came in.
At June’s behest, he ventured into the brothel himself to get it, but Commander Bell, a greasy man, noticed him. Overjoyed, Commander Bell shared this encounter with Commander Wharton, who is Nick’s father-in-law and about to become Serena’s husband.
Prior to the incident where Nick shot a man near the border, who eventually passed away in the hospital despite initially showing signs of recovery, Wharton had already harbored significant mistrust towards Nick.
After discovering that he had visited Jezebel’s, he challenged his daughter’s husband for explanations, leading to Nick unexpectedly disrupting Mayday’s scheme and his bond with June.

Instead of returning to the resistance with Moira, June opted to spend the night with Nick, creating more complexity in her relationship with Luke and causing speculation about whom she might side with under pressure.
However, as Wharton suddenly scrapped his visit to Washington due to investigating his son-in-law’s suspicious activities, it led her to spend a night at Serena’s residence. This is what ultimately resulted in her being hidden away in a cupboard with Nick, when the next day brought an unexpected appearance by Wharton at his fiancée’s house, accompanied by significant news: he had closed down Jezebel’s establishment.
He stated, “I discovered their intention was to carry out a large-scale massacre, targeting all commanders present, and it seemed they nearly succeeded. However, fortunately, through some divine intervention, their plot was unveiled.
Cue June’s alarm. But the worst was yet to come.
“God sees everything,” responded Serena on hearing his news.
“God, and my son-in-law,” he acknowledged.
Cue Nick’s unbearable, burning shame.
Wharton admitted, “I must confess I’d harbored some uncertainties regarding him, but his actions have shown his allegiance.” In fact, it was Nick who unearthed the scheme, and it was Nick who shared all the details with me.
Credit where credit’s due, and all that.
Upon discovering Nick’s profound deception – a act she never believed he was capable of – it felt like her very essence had departed from her physical form.
In the final season of this captivating series so far, there haven’t been any jaw-dropping moments that I could point to. But as a dedicated fan following June’s harrowing journey since her world was shattered, I can say that showrunner Bruce Miller has been cleverly saving his best for a powerful punch, leaving me – and every other viewer – utterly devastated.
1. She believed him to be a different person, but that’s not the case with him. Unlike Luke, who put his family first regardless of the outcome, Nick hasn’t lived up to those standards.
2. He isn’t the man she imagined; quite contrary to Luke, who gave everything for his wife and child, Nick has come up short.
3. She had thought him as one kind of man, but he turned out to be another; unlike Luke, who put his family before himself even at great cost, Nick hasn’t measured up.
4. He wasn’t the person she expected; contrastingly, Luke, who risked all for his wife and child, has shown more commitment than Nick.
5. He is not the man she supposed him to be; unlike Luke, who put family above self, Nick has faltered in that regard.
But not only was it a moment of exceptional drama, it also raises huge questions.

Initially, let’s discuss Mayday’s situation, as their strategy has been significantly disrupted. Now, they will likely have to rethink their strategies since Jezebel, with its abundance of commanders and numerous distractions, offers a more relaxed security environment. This could take an unknown duration for them to figure out a new approach.
Rare chances similar to those offered by the brothel seldom arise, yet the establishment of the New Bethlehem trade route has opened up a vulnerability in Gilead’s defense.
Might the grandiose nature of Serena and Commander Wharton’s wedding, filled with prominent attendees, lead to the influential connections they hope for?
On a more profound note, audiences are left eagerly wondering about the repercussions of Nick’s act of betrayal on his bond with June. Can she muster forgiveness after she’s had ample time to grapple with this shocking revelation?
Instead of directly targeting two border agents from the secret police, he found alternative ways to aid Jezebel, such as infiltrating her hideout known as Jezebel’s. Regardless of these indirect actions, it remains unclear where she might have ended up if not for his clandestine assistance within her inner circle.
If Wharton hadn’t been content with Nick’s response, he might have faced imprisonment, torture by the Eyes, and ultimately, being pinned to a wall – a fate June wouldn’t have endured. This wasn’t just because she cherishes Nick and they have a child together, but also due to the precautions he had taken for her safety that were previously mentioned.

Overthrowing Gilead isn’t achievable without having supporters within its ranks, and it seems Commander Lawrence might be one of them, given his interest in Mayday’s recent plan now that he’s aware some other commanders aim to have him isolated at the wall and close New Bethlehem.
However, unlike Nick, he doesn’t provide what he once did (or would have provided, should their relationship have continued).
It’s possible that June could exploit her betrayal for gain. Following this recent failed uprising in Gilead, security measures are likely to be intensified. However, the regime might become overly confident after subduing Mayday again, potentially making them less resilient to future assaults.
It’s possible that Nick may feel determined to regain June’s trust and seek her forgiveness, which might make him a valuable asset once more. Since Wharton no longer suspects Nick, assuming he’s truly on board with the cause, it isn’t entirely implausible that he could lend a hand in the rebellion somehow.
It’s quite likely that June may not find it in her heart to forgive him despite her desires or feelings based on their past experiences. Their trust, once shattered, appears irreparable, as it would be difficult for her to trust him again with any matter.
If Nick so much as catches a whiff of anything, he can utilize it for self-defense, thus ensuring the safety of Gilead as well.
After the revelation of the events that earned episode 6 its title ‘Surprise’, anticipation fills the air as we move on to episode 7, titled ‘Shattered’. Will the paths of June and Nick continue together or will they part ways permanently from this point forward?
