Foley further clarified that if Ortega could come back, the intention was to have her character act as a benefactor towards Dominique (Natasha Behnam) and Phoenix (character b) in season 5’s group of internet vigilantes. Here are his additional thoughts:

It was an idea, perhaps, that we believed Ortega’s Ellie might act as a patron towards Dominique and Phoenix, but as it turned out, we found that this scenario was impossible to realize.

Simultaneously, Lo proposed that although Ellie’s history with Joe might have hinted at her supporting him, he thought it more probable that her character would have discerned his role in her sister’s demise. You might find it convincing to support Joe due to his support during a tough period in her life. However, it’s also plausible that Ellie is astute enough to suspect Joe’s involvement in her sister’s demise, despite the fact that it was Love who ultimately caused it. As such, she could have harbored resentment towards him as well.

What These Comments Mean For You Season 5

Joe Would Have Been Deeply Hurt By Ellie’s Betrayal

Although Ortega’s character only appeared in season 2 of You, she remained a significant reference point throughout seasons 2 and 3, with Joe continuing to financially support her. With the finale of season 4 indicating that Joe was planning to return to the US after his time in England, some viewers pondered if Ortega might rejoin the cast for the show’s final season. Given that Joe didn’t directly cause Ellie’s sister’s death, but her demise was a consequence of Joe’s actions, it would have added an intriguing twist to include Ortega in the series finale.

From my perspective as a devoted fan, it’s not hard to imagine that Ellie could quickly discern Joe’s role in Delilah’s demise. It seems only logical for her to take action against those who initiated the events leading to his fall in season 5. Furthermore, taking into account Joe’s profound affection for Ellie, in his twisted mindset, such an act would undoubtedly feel like a devastating betrayal – one that would have left him with deep emotional wounds.

Due to Ortega’s rapid ascent and overflowing schedule, it’s not shocking that Foley and Lo couldn’t get her back for Season 5. Still, it would have been intriguing to witness how the show’s conclusion might have unfolded if Ortega could have reprised her Season 2 character.
