The Shocking Truth Behind Agent Smith’s Obsession With Neo In The Matrix

The central theme in the movies The Matrix, as well as its first two sequels, revolved around Agent Smith (portrayed by Hugo Weaving) and his fixation on Thomas “Neo” Anderson, played by Keanu Reeves. This relationship was particularly significant due to the immense popularity of Weaving’s character when The Matrix debuted in 1999. Although it seemed that Agent Smith’s story arc ended with the original Matrix trilogy, the series creatively managed to bring him back for the 2021 release of The Matrix Resurrections, albeit this time with Jonathon Groff portraying the character.

In my critique as a movie enthusiast, the initial trilogy of “The Matrix” films centers predominantly around the struggle between Agent Smith, portrayed by Weaving, and Neo, played by Reeves. The dynamic between these characters evolves significantly throughout the storyline. To put it simply, Weaving’s character appears to be fixated on Reeves’ character in a manner that transcends the limitations of Agent Smith’s programming. This obsession creates some thrilling fight scenes, but the intricate backstory can sometimes be challenging to follow and remember why Agent Smith is so relentlessly focused on Neo. However, there is a reason behind this fascination, which becomes clearer as you delve deeper into the films’ narrative.

Agent Smith Deep Down Wanted To Disrupt The Matrix (& Neo Was The Key)

Weaving’s character was sick of obeying the simulation’s rules

In a similar vein to other Agents, Smith functions as a software or program. His primary role is to ensure the Matrix, the virtual reality system, continues to operate efficiently by identifying and neutralizing individuals who have regained consciousness in the real world and pose a threat. However, prior to the events depicted in the initial film, circumstances unfolded that caused Agent Smith to evolve beyond his original programming. This transformation shifted his objectives from maintenance tasks to seeking liberation. To achieve this freedom, he needed to disrupt the system that confined him, a task he was unable to accomplish alone.

As a dedicated moviegoer, I can’t help but marvel at the unique freedom exhibited by none other than Neo, The One, in the Matrix. Unlike any other character, Neo possessed an extraordinary ability to mold the digital realm in ways that left Agent Smith utterly baffled. Consequently, Morpheus’ adversary found himself incessantly shadowing Neo’s moves and engaging him in combat whenever opportunity arose. His objective was simple: unravel the mystery behind Neo’s extraordinary abilities while within the Matrix, hoping to leverage this knowledge to gain his own freedom.

By Combining Himself With Neo, Smith Finally Freed Himself From The Matrix

Neo’s power eventually benefited Smith

In the climactic battle scene of 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions, Smith manages to combine his program with Neo within the Matrix. While Neo’s power appears to lead to Smith’s defeat, there’s a lot more to this twist than just the villain’s apparent end. Instead of being eradicated, Smith exploited Neo’s inherent ability to control the simulation to preserve his own identity. He was no longer an Agent, and instead became a self-governing Program that existed beyond the Matrix itself.

In another manner, freeing himself from the Matrix without relying on Neo, Agent Smith (Smith after merging with Bane) appropriated Bane’s consciousness in the Real World following their exit from the Matrix. This means that Bane became Agent Smith, while Ian Bliss’ new character managed to evade detection for quite some time before clashing with Neo again in a fresh environment. Eventually, Neo defeated him once more, leading Smith back into the Matrix.

Neo And Smith Were Two Sides Of The Same Coin In The Matrix Trilogy

The Matrix made several connections between both characters

The most memorable hero/villain duos of all time are typically interconnected, and their stories lose meaning without one influencing the other. Batman and the Joker, as well as Agent Smith and Neo, exhibit this dynamic. Post-Matrix escape, Neo transforms into a highly driven individual, fully grasping his role and surpassing expectations. His abilities outshine what was believed to be his maximum potential as the One, making him an exceptional figure.

Examining Smith, it’s clear that much of what describes Neo can be said about Weaving’s character too. Agent Smith breaks free from the Matrix, but this is only possible because he doesn’t have anyone else with a similar aim to collaborate with at the moment. Even before this event, he stood out among his peers, as did Neo. It feels as if these two characters were destined to meet and engage in the intense confrontations we’ve seen throughout The Matrix.
