As a long-time Simpsons fan and someone who has grown up with this iconic show, I can confidently say that “Holidays of Future Passed” was the most poignant Christmas episode yet, and it almost served as the perfect finale for the series. The episode’s ability to explore the adult lives of Bart and Lisa while highlighting the impact of their childhood on their future choices was nothing short of brilliant.
Over its 35-year span, The Simpsons has produced numerous outstanding Christmas episodes, with another one due later this month. However, among these holiday specials, the absolute best one was nearly the series finale. With many memorable Christmas episodes under its belt, The Simpsons is well-versed in the spirit of the season. Episodes like the series debut, “Simpsons Roasting On an Open Fire,” or when Bart misbehaved in “Marge Be Not Proud,” or the one featuring Funzo are all fantastic in their own right. But “Holidays of Future Passed” took things to a whole new level.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over “Holidays of Future Passed” from Season 23 of The Simpsons. This captivating episode takes us back to the future we glimpsed in Season 16’s “Future Drama,” offering a fascinating glimpse into what the lives of The Simpsons’ families might look like decades down the line.
The Simpsons Almost Ended With a Christmas Special
Back in 2013, during a discussion hosted by Conan O’Brien, The Simpsons’ current showrunner, Al Jean, shared an interesting tidbit. He revealed that the episode “Holidays of Future Passed” was initially intended to serve as the series finale. This was because Fox had informed the team that they might need to wrap up the show if contract negotiations with the cast, which occur every four years, didn’t go smoothly. Fortunately, the negotiations did take place and the cast even agreed to a pay cut to keep the show running due to their deep affection for it. If things hadn’t worked out, “Holidays of Future Passed” would have been the last episode.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always wondered if any episode of “The Simpsons” could potentially serve as the grand finale. Jean Matuszewski, however, suggests that such an episode might not be as dramatic or climactic as we might expect. He points out moments like Maggie speaking in “Lisa’s First Word” and the meta-episode “Behind the Laughter,” reminiscent of classic Behind the Music documentaries, as examples where an ending could occur.
What Is Holidays of Future Passed?
In the sequel titled ‘Holidays of Future Past’, we leap 30 years ahead from the events depicted in ‘Future Drama’. This advanced timeline shows Bart has fallen on hard times and now resides in Springfield Elementary, converted to apartments. He and Jenda have parted ways and started separate lives; they have two children together. Lisa, on the other hand, has married, divorced, and remarried Milhouse several times throughout the years. They have a child together, and her teenage daughter, Zia, often disrespects Lisa and is heavily engrossed in online activities. Lastly, Maggie has become a renowned musician and is expecting a baby, with the identity of the father remaining unknown (as a humorous touch).
In this scenario, Homer and Marge remain happily united, while Bart and Lisa return home with their respective families for Christmas. As the holidays progress, Bart begins to feel envious of Homer’s close bond with the grandchildren, whereas Lisa becomes disrespectful towards Marge, thinking she can’t understand her struggles with her daughter. It is during a touching conversation in Bart’s old treehouse that they share emotional moments and open up about their past. In a poignant revelation, Bart confesses to Lisa that he has always admired and aspired to be like her, due to a court-ordered sincerity chip implanted in his brain.
In their maturity, the two share a stronger connection than they did as children, and for the remainder of the series, they strive to reconcile with Marge and Bart’s sons. Here, Bart comes to understand that Homer was truly doing his best, despite appearing to be a poor father due to his own upbringing. Bart recognizes the repeating cycle of poor parenting and aspires to alter this trend for his sons. On the other hand, Lisa becomes aware that her daughter has been secretly admiring her. Although this admiration was fabricated, Lisa is content with not exposing the truth.
Why This Would’ve Been a Perfect Simpsons Finale
As a die-hard Simpsons fan, I’d say this potential final episode would have been an absolutely satisfying conclusion. It manages to advance the central family in substantial ways through its time jump, a common trend in animated finale episodes over the years. Moreover, it ties the series together beautifully by starting and ending with a Christmas special, bringing everything full circle.
Fortunately, The Simpsons continued for another 13 seasons beyond that point, with more potential episodes yet to come. When the show eventually concludes, as Al Jean predicted, it won’t feature a grand finale. Instead, the final episode will simply be another entertaining installment from the series, and fans will have to accept its end when it arrives. With so many excellent episodes spanning over 35 years of The Simpsons’ animated history, there are numerous options for a fitting conclusion.
