The original Sims game was launched in February 2005, marking 25 years for the series next month. I’m confident that Electronic Arts (EA) will commemorate this anniversary in some fashion, given the game’s consistent profitability and the players who are open to purchasing additional content, even when reviews for a pack aren’t favorable. The intrigue lies in how EA might choose to honor The Sims at 25 years old. My speculation leans towards a company-wide sale or a free add-on as the most probable approach. Nevertheless, I’ve got a list of alternative celebratory methods that I hope they consider.
Naturally, a sale or free expansion is always appealing, but they typically impact only games like “The Sims 4” and sometimes “The Sims 3”. Given that it’s the 25-year anniversary for the original “Sims”, the celebration should steer clear of typical sales. So, I suggest some creative ideas that I believe would not only pay tribute to this milestone but also excite players.
Let me know what you think!
Make The Sims More Accessible or Remaster the Games
Right now, it’s quite challenging to enjoy The Sims, as you either require the original hardware from when the game was at its peak, or you must consider unsupported methods (which I won’t discuss). This predicament makes the 25th anniversary an ideal opportunity for releasing an updated version of The Sims that can run smoothly on contemporary computers, or for remastering The Sims to provide an optimal gaming experience on modern systems.
It seems to me that the best approach to honor The Sims and its evolution over the past 25 years could be through a special celebration, but I’m not expecting this to materialize. It’s often challenging to preserve and update older games due to lost code, making the process even more difficult. This could potentially lead EA to recreate the game from scratch in order to re-release it, though I’m unsure if they would find that effort worthwhile. Yet, I can only wish for this dream to become a reality someday.
Introduce a Complete Edition for The Sims 3
Both The Sims and The Sims 2 offer full versions where you buy the main game along with all its add-ons at once. It’s now been a decade since The Sims 4 came out as the latest main game, but there’s still no affordable bundle for The Sims 3, which might have been too expensive for some players or those hesitant to spend roughly $400 on an older game and its expansions. Interestingly, The Sims 5 doesn’t seem like it will replace The Sims 4 but rather serve as a spin-off, so there may never be a full edition of The Sims 4 while it remains the primary game.
If Electronic Arts (EA) chooses not to release a comprehensive edition, offering smaller bundles for The Sims 3 along with its expansions at a reduced price could still be an effective solution. Purchasing the packs individually as they become available doesn’t seem too costly initially. However, when you consider that acquiring all the content for The Sims 3 now amounts to approximately $400, it can feel overwhelming. This might discourage players from buying the game, which I believe could be mitigated by implementing a bundle system that lowers the overall price as a means of honoring the franchise’s significant milestone.
Announce a New Spinoff with RPG Elements
It’s well-known that I hold a fond affection for The Sims Medieval, often yearning for fresh content in this particular spinoff. Yet, if new content isn’t on the horizon, I would gladly welcome another spinoff within the series, as long as it incorporates the slight RPG elements that made The Sims Medieval so endearing.
Essentially, rather than managing a neighborhood, you’re ruling over a kingdom in this game, and you can assign your Sims various positions such as spies, kings, or physicians. Each role comes with unique responsibilities akin to the tasks found in active careers within The Sims 4. These roles and their individual duties work together to create an engaging narrative about the kingdom’s secrets and intrigues, making it even more enjoyable to delve into and uncover all the hidden mysteries.
A fresh take on the style of “The Sims Medieval,” perhaps as a remastered edition with additional content, could attract new gamers to the series. This would particularly interest players seeking a more casual role-playing game experience that doesn’t demand extensive time investments or relentless dedication to quests and resource gathering. The original combined life simulation and RPG aspects beautifully, and such a new spinoff would undoubtedly be a delightful surprise as we celebrate 25 years of the franchise.
I’m unsure about how Electronic Arts (EA) will mark The Sims reaching its 25th anniversary, but I hope it goes beyond just a sale or an update on the movie. Instead, I think it would be fitting to reflect on the game’s history and what led to the success of games like The Sims 4 today. This could be an opportunity for EA to mix things up and try something new.
