As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant tapestry of human stories unfolding on the silver screen, I eagerly anticipate The Split: Barcelona. Having traversed the global cinema landscape from the sun-drenched shores of The White Lotus to the enchanting islands of Mamma Mia and the steamy confines of Love Island, it’s refreshing to see a series that so skillfully weaves these elements together.
Originally intending a three-season run, the creator of “The Split,” Abi Morgan, recently shared the surprising influence behind her Spain-set extensions.
In two years, the Defoe family revisits Barcelona during the holiday season for a dual episode. This special occasion finds their tough divorce attorneys abandoning their office as they jet off overseas to attend the wedding of Nathan (Stephen Mangan) and his daughter Hannah’s (Nicola Stern) child, Liv (Elizabeth Roberts). In simpler terms, after two years, we see the Defoe family again during Christmas in Barcelona. Instead of working at their law office, they travel abroad to attend the wedding of Nathan and Liv, who is Hannah’s daughter.
When composing her full-length features, Morgan often drew inspiration from the television shows she enjoyed, such as the widely acclaimed ITV reality series.
She shared, “In a flash, my mind drifted to the stunning overseas series that I adore, ranging from ‘The White Lotus’ all the way to ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Love Island.’
As a cinephile, I can’t help but feel drawn into the allure of a captivating urban landscape – one that echoes a familiar yet distinct cultural tapestry. For me, Spain seemed almost tangible, its vibrant essence instantly resonating within my soul.
Apart from his professional engagements at Noble, Hale Defoe, Morgan was equally eager to delve into this family dynamic in a less formal setting, distanced from the corporate sphere.
She explained: “We liked the idea of taking this family out of the place that they’re known for and out of the urban slick environment, the cool aesthetic of London and that high-end end of divorce.”
What transpires when you encounter them during their leisure moments? We often imagine such scenarios. We get glimpses into their personal lives at home and behind the scenes of their workplace. However, a unique experience that stands out is attending a destination wedding with them. The event can be likened to a well-structured three-act play: the arrival and pre-drinks, the hen party, and finally, the wedding itself.
What’s the likelihood of them staying together, and if they do, what might the outcome be in the long run? How will their relationship unfold and what could potentially be next for them?
Morgan was thrilled to find out that all the actors had agreed to return for the sequel, allowing him to carry on the narratives of Hannah (Nicola Stern) and her extended family.
I strongly cared that the final episode of the third series left an impression of hope, and that it conveyed Hannah wasn’t reliant on another relationship,” she continued.
She spent this time figuring out who she is and deciding what she desires, having just ended a relationship.
In the special episodes, Morgan was keen on delving into the subsequent phase of Hannah’s life following her separation from her spouse of three decades, once her grown-up children had moved out.
“What will the next phase of her life entail? I simply couldn’t help but want to come back and document that moment,” she said.)
It seems like we’re aiming to document those remarkable, zany, amusing, poignant, affectionate few days with this family. They’re going through a process of coming together, breaking apart, and then supporting one another anew.
The series titled “The Split: Barcelona” is set to broadcast on BBC One at 9 PM on the 29th and 30th of December. From the 29th, both episodes can be found on BBC iPlayer.
