As an ardent admirer of British television, steeped in the annals of timeless classics and contemporary gems alike, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming reboot of Bergerac! The casting of Damien Molony as the iconic sleuth Jim Bergerac has left me in a state of anticipation.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that back in July, it was officially announced that Damien Molony, known for his roles in Brassic and The Split, would be taking the lead in a fresh take on Bergerac. Now, we’ve been treated to our first sneak peek of the actor embodying the legendary detective, stirring anticipation among fans.
A collection of initial images from the Jersey set of the remake have been shared by UKTV, featuring shots. One image displays Molony’s character, Jim Bergerac, strolling on an unoccupied beach, while another captures him engaged in a discussion with Zoë Wanamaker (from “My Family”), who plays his mother-in-law, Charlie Hungerford.
In early 2025, a six-episode show featuring Philip Glenister (known for Life on Mars), Pippa Haywood (acclaimed in Bodyguard), Robert Gilbert (noted in Killing Eve), Sasha Behar (recognized in Unforgotten), Timothy Renouf (from A Very British Scandal) and Celine Arden (renowned in Us or Them) as the character named Kara, will debut on U&DRAMA.
This screenplay was penned by Toby Whithouse, who is known for “Being Human,” as well as Brian Fillis from “Trust,” Catherine Tregenna of “The One That Got Away,” and Polly Buckle of “A Discovery of Witches.” It’s an adaptation that originated from the series conceived by Robert Banks Stewart.
In a new turn of events, John Nettles, who portrayed the lead character for nearly a decade (from 1981 to 1991), is being replaced by Monlony in the title role.
As stated by UKTV, the updated version represents a “fresh, modern interpretation” of the classic detective series, while still paying tribute to its legendary status, yet infusing it with a touch of current-day flair.
In contrast to the original format, this series will deviate by not focusing on individual cases per episode. Instead, a single murder mystery will unfold and span over a period of six episodes.
In this account, viewers are introduced to Jim Bergerac, who is struggling with loss and alcohol addiction after the passing of his wife, trying to find his way through grief.
Charlie, Jim’s wife’s mother, has worries that Jim might not prioritize his daughter Kim adequately. When a woman from New Jersey high society gets murdered, Jim needs to tackle his private hardships to regain his former status as a strong detective.
As an old adversary reappears in his history, Bergerac must rely on his keen detective senses and previous victories to maneuver through complex familial relationships and the vigilant gaze of law enforcement, ultimately resolving the mystery at hand.
As I eagerly await the premiere of this upcoming film, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement and gratitude for being given the opportunity to portray such a cherished character.
John Nettles created an unforgettable impact, leaving massive footprints to follow, and I aspire to offer a modern twist on this renowned figure,” he expressed. “I’m thrilled for the audience to embark on this adventure with me.
Bergerac will air on free-to-air channel U&DRAMA and free streaming service U in 2025.
