The Strange Reason Everyone Thinks Rabbits Like Carrots

It’s quite clear that Easter is coming up soon if you’ve recently been near a large retail store.

Consequently, it’s quite probable that you have come across one of the most perplexing deceptions imaginable, which surprisingly revolves around carrots and rabbits.

It’s quite possible that you’re familiar with chocolate bunnies, stuffed rabbits, and cards featuring cartoon rabbits nibbling on carrots. However, a video by author Jason K. Largan, currently trending on social media, reveals that this depiction is actually not accurate.

The Whole ‘Rabbits Love Carrots’ Thing Is a Total Lie

Apart from rabbits having a fondness for Trix cereal, it’s commonly believed that they enjoy eating carrots. Many children who have had pet rabbits might remember feeding these adorable creatures carrots as part of their diet. However, veterinary experts at Vets Now caution against this practice, explaining that carrots are unhealthy for rabbits due to their high sugar content and potential harm to their health. Interestingly, rabbits don’t even consume carrots in the wild.

What?!

Enter Bugs Bunny: The Real Reason This Myth Exists

It seems the notion that rabbits are fond of carrots is quite widespread. This common belief can be attributed to our beloved, quick-witted, and unfazed cartoon character, Bugs Bunny.

You probably assumed that Bugs Bunny always loved carrots.

He always carried one in his hand, and you’d often hear him say, “What’s cookin’, Doc?” even if he was talking with his mouth full. However, it turns out he wasn’t really eating because he enjoyed it. Instead, he was mimicking a scene from the 1934 film, It Happened One Night. In that movie, Clark Gable, a renowned actor, pretends to eat a carrot while talking with his co-star, mocking a character played by Claudette Colbert. This scene was famous before Bugs Bunny made his debut in the Merrie Melodies cartoons.

You can watch the “carrot chomping” scene from It Happened One Night below:

To what extent did this film and Clark Gable’s portrayal have an impact? The effect was so profound that it served as a source of inspiration for animators in shaping the speech pattern of the beloved character, Bugs Bunny. Moreover, they even modeled his signature dedication to carrots after this iconic role.

Intriguingly enough, my fascination with Gable’s character seems to have had an unexpected ripple effect: it was Bugs Bunny, inspired by this character, who ultimately molded the public perception of what rabbits represent, even though their association with carrots is purely fictional. To this day, it’s challenging not to envision the Easter Bunny or a cartoon rabbit on a greeting card without one clutching a carrot.

Every Movie Theater Candy, Ranked From Worst to Best

27. Sno-Caps

For clarity, let me restate our viewpoint: Sno-Caps, in our opinion, are not appealing at all and we would strongly advise against consuming them.

26. Red Vines

It seems strange to me that there’s an ongoing discussion about Twizzlers versus Red Vines. The only explanation I can think of for someone preferring a box of Red Vines over a bag of Twizzlers is if they haven’t tasted a Twizzler before. To me, Twizzlers taste nothing like old cough medicine that has solidified.

This version maintains the original meaning and tone while using slightly different word choices to create variety and improve readability.

25. Mike and Ike

At the movie theater, there’s a variety of candy shaped like fruits, and among them, Mike and Ike is the least enticing to me. I can’t remember ever having one that tasted fresh. No matter how they redesign the packaging, the tiny bits inside always seem stale, as if they’ve been stored in an old vending machine at a bowling alley for a quarter of a century.

24. MIlk Duds

Milk Duds aren’t necessarily bad, but they can be quite excessive. They tend to stick in your teeth and create a blockage in your mouth. When you purchase Milk Duds, you’re essentially also buying an $8 drink because it’s rare for anyone to finish an entire box of them without liquids. It’s a scientific fact that your throat would struggle with such dry consumption.

23. Jujyfruits

Once more, other, higher-quality fruit sweets exist. Moreover, they were the cause of Elaine losing her relationship and her job in that specific “Seinfeld” episode.

There are better fruit candies out there, and they led to Elain’s breakup and job loss in a Seinfeld episode.

22. Whoppers

Malt belongs in milkshakes, not in little chocolate balls. That’s my position.

21. Gummy Bears

Concession bags are usually quite large, beneficial for some snacks but overwhelming for others. For instance, gummy bears are delightful when served in small amounts, but who hasn’t overindulged in a whole bag of them? That’s simply too much gummy goodness!

20. Cookie Dough Bites

The sale of cookie dough is one of the most deceitful tricks in American history. People were persuaded to purchase uncooked dough! Can you imagine selling raw pasta or vegetables next? Absolutely not.

19. Welch’s Fruit Snacks

An improved option compared to Gummy Bears, these treats offer a wider range of fruit flavors that are more authentic in taste. Notably, their marketing claims “Fruit is our first ingredient!” which gives the impression they might be healthier than they actually are.

18. Reese’s Pieces

Although Reese’s Pieces gained fame due to their role in the movie “E.T.”, they aren’t as strong among the Reese’s line of products. If they offered Reese’s Cups or Crispy Crunchy Bars instead, it would be more appealing.

17. Lemonheads

A standout yet undervalued choice. However, I have a minor issue with their name – “Lemonheads” seems more fitting for a colloquial term of an unmentionable body part than a top-tier pick. If they had chosen a different name, they might very well be ranked higher on the list.

16. Good & Plenty

It’s undeniable that licorice is a highly controversial candy. Some people adore it, while others can’t stand it. I happen to be among the fans, and Good & Plenty at the movies are my favorite. The concession stand version of these candies is enormous, and due to their strong licorice flavor, eating an entire bag takes a significant amount of time; you won’t polish off this snack before the end of the previews. To top it off: They’re fat-free!

15. Raisinets

As a film enthusiast, I’ve got to say, these films are decent enough, but let’s be honest – they’re borderline healthy. After all, who goes to the cinema for a nutritious snack? You go to the movies for an escape, a chance to indulge in junk food without fear of judgment while immersed in the dark.

14. Swedish Fish

Tasty, indeed Swedish, but somewhat monotonous. Over time, each bite offering the identical taste becomes repetitive and can grow tiresome. Compared to a similar textured candy with greater flavor variety, it ranks lower on our list.

13. Hot Tamales

Here’s another treat that the author finds delightful but polarizing. It offers a crisp, lively texture, serving as a pleasant change from numerous sweets that are excessively loaded with sugar and leave you craving for more liquid due to their high sweetness level.

12. Sweetart Ropes

Stepping into the realm of modern cinema, a fresh face that’s quite a delight – and surprisingly so! These candies aren’t reminiscent of those chalky SweeTarts from yesteryears, previously known by another name. Yet, it seems even the concession stand isn’t immune to the pressures of rebranding. Regardless of their moniker, I can assure you, it takes little effort to finish off an entire bag of these tasty treats!

11. Butterfinger Bites

I don’t know about you, but when I see that “MOVIE PACK” logo on a box, I get a hit of endorphins.

10. Dots

Dots Flavors Power Ranking:
1. Red
2. Green
3. Yellow
4. Pink
5. Orange

9. Skittles

A timeless favorite, this cinema popcorn bucket, despite costing around $12, provides a significant part of your movie experience. It would rank higher on our list if they hadn’t switched the lime Skittle for green apple a few years back, making Skittles essentially obsolete to me ever since.

8. Buncha Crunch

Most mini chocolate bars are low-quality items, primarily intended for trick-or-treating on Halloween. However, Buncha Crunch is one exception where the smaller version surpasses the original. Who would opt for a Crunch bar when you can enjoy a heap of Crunchies instead? There’s simply no contest.

7. M&Ms

An innovative idea: Design a unique M&M vending machine for cinemas, similar to the Coca-Cola Freestyle soda dispensers. This machine would allow customers to create their own custom blend of M&Ms, such as mixing plain with mint and pretzel flavors, to enjoy during the movie. All varieties, except perhaps the unusual cherry ones, are generally well-liked.

6. Goobers

It’s important to be upfront: my digestive system isn’t great and I’m supposed to avoid nuts and seeds. However, I occasionally indulge in Goobers because they are simply amazing considering their name.

5. Twizzlers

As a devoted cinephile, I often refer to them as “The Good Red Vines.” Frankly, I haven’t found a point where my Twizzler consumption for one sitting becomes too much, if such a limit exists.

4. Snickers Bites

Among the top-notch candy bars, one stands out for its excellent miniature versions. Not only are these bitesized pieces delightful, but they’re also pre-unwrapped, reducing the time it takes from the bag to your mouth to a bare minimum.

3. Junior Mints

Come on — who doesn’t love a Junior Mint? It’s chocolate, it’s peppermint. It’s delicious!

2. Sour Patch Kids

Similar to Swedish Fish, but offering a wider range of flavors and the excitement of those tangy crystal bits. Each taste is delightful, and one large bag is perfect for sharing.

1. Starburst

Starburst virtually matches up with most movie theater candies. It offers a nice range of flavors, it takes a while to consume, and it boasts a delightful, long-lasting chewy consistency that never clings to your teeth. Without a doubt, it’s the top choice among them all.
