The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Will be “Broader in Scope,” Actor Says

As a die-hard Super Mario Bros fan who grew up playing these iconic games and even attended Nintendo conventions dressed as my favorite character, Toad, I couldn’t be more excited about the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie! Keegan-Michael Key’s recent interview has given us some tantalizing tidbits about the upcoming film, and I can hardly contain my excitement.

Following the phenomenal box office hit of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” last year, it came as no shock when Nintendo revealed they were teaming up with Illumination for a sequel. Although the movie is still a few years off, information about it is scarce at this time. However, actor Keegan-Michael Key, who voiced Toad in the first film and will reprise his role in the upcoming sequel, has shared some limited insights into what we can anticipate.

In a chat with Men’s Journey, Key shared that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will expand on its original scope, offering a particularly captivating backdrop. Additionally, enthusiasts should look forward to finding numerous hidden references, much like in the initial film.

Regarding the second film, I’d describe it as covering a larger area, and the setting is quite intriguing in terms of its connection to the Mario universe. There are some amazing hidden references, or ‘Easter eggs,’ and the experience has been really thrilling so far.

The movie is planning to bring in a number of fresh faces into its ensemble, some of whom are well-loved by fans while others might be less known or recognized by all viewers.

He mentioned that the creative team has expanded the world where these characters reside, introducing us to a mix of both familiar faces and lesser-known characters. What’s exciting is that due to the current narrative structure, these new characters will likely prove to be captivating.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s sequel is currently scheduled to release in April 2026.
