The Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel Could be Titled Super Mario World

Approximately one year ago, Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination made an announcement, which came as no surprise to many, about a sequel to the highly successful film, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, scheduled for release in 2026. Since then, information about the movie has been scarce, but it appears that a significant piece of news has surfaced recently.

On NBC Universal’s official website, a report was posted detailing the lineup of titles revealed at their 2025-2026 Upfront event, and one of these upcoming movies is rumored to be “Super Mario World”. Please note that

On the site, it is stated that a variety of upcoming films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, and Illumination were showcased, such as “Megan 2.0”, “Nobody 2”, “The Bad Guys Part 2”, “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Downton Abbey: The Final Chapter”, “Black Phone 2”, “HIM”, “The Phoenician Plot”, “Super Mario Bros. Movie”, “Shrek”, and “Minions”.

Last October, actor Keegan-Michael Key, known as Toad’s voice in the Mario movies, mentioned that the sequel would have a “broader scope” and would “expand the universe.” A title like Super Mario World could align with this broader scope, while it would also be an excellent method to capitalize on the nostalgia of fans of the classic 2D platforming game from the beloved SNES.

At the moment, we don’t have the official title or details about the upcoming Mario film yet. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long before we get more information. Keep an eye out for further announcements.
