As a lifelong DC Comics fan and die-hard Arrowverse enthusiast, I must admit that the trailer for the upcoming Superman movie left me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up watching Smallville and following the evolution of the CW’s DC Universe, it was heartening to see how the Arrowverse paved the way for this new era of DC storytelling.
I remember waiting eagerly each week for new episodes of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and even Superman & Lois, knowing that I would be treated to complex plots and emotional stories within just 8 days between episodes. And now, seeing the level of detail and visual effects in the Superman trailer, it’s clear that the filmmakers are taking full advantage of not being restricted by the constraints of small-screen production.
I must say, I was a little skeptical at first when I heard about James Gunn directing a Superman movie, but after seeing the trailer, I am confident that he has the perfect blend of humor and heart to bring this iconic character to life on the big screen. The jokes in the trailer were spot-on, and I can’t wait to see what other surprises they have in store for us.
In all honesty, if you had told me years ago that we would one day see a Superman movie with an interconnected Justice League, I wouldn’t have believed it. But thanks to the Arrowverse, this dream is now a reality. The CW’s portrayal of DC characters may have had its flaws, but they were important to us fans, and just like the film, will forever remain a legacy.
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11th, and I can hardly wait! Let’s hope that this movie lives up to the hype and continues to push the boundaries of superhero storytelling. And who knows? Maybe we’ll even get a cameo from my favorite Arrowverse character – Felicity Smoak! After all, she did have quite the knack for hacking into systems, so maybe she could help out with the Justice League’s tech needs. 😉
As a film enthusiast, let me tell you, the fresh trailer for Superman 2025 has left me in awe, rekindling my admiration for the Arrowverse. This tantalizing sneak peek has not only grabbed the attention of long-time DC Comics aficionados like myself but also made me reassess the franchise from an entirely new perspective.
Despite its imperfections, the CW Network has managed to accomplish something that the DC Extended Universe often found challenging: consistently delivering a compelling and harmonious storyline to its audience. This feat is nothing short of remarkable!
Approximately four weeks have elapsed since the final episode of Superman & Lois, marking the conclusion of a 12-year journey featuring DC characters on the CW. Although some might argue that Smallville paved the way for the Arrowverse as early as 2001, it wasn’t until 2019 that the series was officially incorporated, with Arrow serving as the main catalyst for this franchise. Over this period, they built a vast universe – one that encompassed numerous heroes, villains, timeframes, and dimensions. As the new era of DC stories unfolds in the upcoming Superman movie, it’s evident that the Arrowverse played a significant role in setting the stage for this narrative evolution, demonstrating that interconnected storylines flourish when handled with finesse.
A Newfound Respect For The Arrowverse
Although the Arrowverse has faced criticism for its limited budget CGI, weak storylines, and inconsistencies, watching the Superman trailer has made me appreciate the remarkable feats achieved by these shows under tight constraints. For instance, it took only 6-7 weeks to film Superman, which spans over two hours. On the other hand, the creative forces behind Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Superman & Lois crafted intricate storylines and emotional narratives within just 8 days for each episode, delivering around 40 minutes of content per week. Remarkably, they did this while simultaneously managing multiple other shows. Despite these limitations, they still produced countless memorable scenes, such as Barry Allen’s brave sacrifices and Oliver Queen’s poignant farewell.
Missed Opportunities: Superman Will Deliver What the Arrowverse Couldn’t
Despite the Arrowverse’s impressive array of accomplishments, it did fail to tie up some loose ends and fully develop certain concepts. One such missed opportunity was the hint of John Diggle finding a Green Lantern ring, which fans were eagerly anticipating but were left hanging when Arrow ended. On the other hand, the trailer for Superman revealed that Nathan Fillion will play Guy Gardner, a beloved character in the Green Lantern Corps. This casting decision underscores James Gunn’s dedication to delving into the cosmic aspects of the DC Universe, something that the CW could not quite manage.
Although Krypto made an appearance towards the end of “Superman & Lois” on The CW, they didn’t spend much time developing his backstory due to budget constraints, visual effect demands, and the need for extensive live-action training. However, the upcoming movie won’t have those same limitations, allowing Krypto to take a more significant role in the storyline. Given his presence in the “Superman” trailer, it seems he will be highlighting his bond with the Man of Steel more effectively.
In “Arrow,” the character of Curtis Holt, played by Echo Kellum, was depicted as a lovable tech genius and devoted sidekick, frequently providing humor while demonstrating his intellect through creations like the T-Spheres. His character development centered around vulnerability, hopefulness, and a cheerful attitude, making him a relatable figure amidst the show’s darker themes. However, the brief glimpse of Mister Terrific in the “Superman” trailer hints at a more assertive and commanding portrayal, aligning more with his comic book persona. This new depiction seems strategic and self-assured, highlighting his status as one of the world’s brightest minds. If skillfully executed, Gunn could leverage Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl to introduce the Justice Society of America into the upcoming DC Universe.
The Arrowverse Paved The Way For Superman
The “Superman” movie marks a fresh beginning for the DC Universe, but it’s crucial to remember the groundwork laid by the shows on the CW. Prior to “Arrow,” the concept of a connected superhero TV universe was unexplored territory. However, the franchise demonstrated that viewers were ready to immerse themselves in extended stories if they were presented with meaningful crossovers, pivotal events, and delightful Easter eggs. For instance, during “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the CW brought all its shows under one narrative umbrella while also celebrating decades of DC comic book storytelling across various media platforms. This included unexpected appearances by Tom Welling, Burt Ward, Tom Ellis, Robert Wuhl, Wil Wheaton, and Erica Durance, as well as the inclusion of teams like the Titans, Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, and Stargirl. In essence, this mega-event showed that cross-series storytelling in a comic book style can thrive on screen, despite business challenges.
It’s challenging to envision Warner Bros. and James Gunn feeling secure enough to initiate a project as significant as Superman, considering the large number of Justice League members slated for the movie. In essence, the Arrowverse served as a test ground for superhero narratives, leading to more ambitious projects in the future. Although the CW’s portrayal of DC characters had its imperfections, it was vital to DC fans, and much like the film, will continue to be cherished as part of their legacy.
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11th.
