As a tech enthusiast with over two decades of experience, I’ve seen my fair share of product launches and discontinuations. The news about Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 receiving its final security update is disappointing, to say the least.
The Surface Duo 2 has now probably received its last security update, signaling the conclusion of Microsoft’s short-lived reentry into the smartphone sector. Launched in October 2021, the Surface Duo 2 was initially announced with a commitment to provide software updates for three years. Regrettably, throughout this period, Microsoft managed to offer only one significant Android version update, which is disappointingly small for a device priced at $1,500.
Despite Microsoft ending support for the initial Surface Duo last year, it did receive more than one significant Android version upgrade, starting with Android 10 and later receiving updates to Android 11 and Android 12L during its operational period. This is more than what the Surface Duo 2 received upon launch, which only got an update from Android 11 to Android 12L. Although it didn’t receive the typical three major OS updates offered by most Android manufacturers, it still managed to get a couple of updates, which is better than the Surface Duo 2.
Last year, the company ceased efforts in Android phone hardware production when it scaled back the Surface device lineup, resulting in Panos Panay, former head of Windows and Surface, leaving the company. Since then, Microsoft has largely ignored the Surface Duo, and now, the Surface Duo 2 is receiving its last security update before October 21, marking the end of support for the device, with no further updates planned.
Essentially, the Surface Duo’s journey comes to an end as Microsoft decides not to restart this product line using Android-based smartphone hardware in the future. This move marks the second occasion that Microsoft has parted ways with its mobile phone business, the first instance being when it let go of Windows Phone and Lumia back in 2017.
If Microsoft decides to introduce a new smartphone down the line, I would strongly advise you to avoid it. The Surface Duo, their latest attempt at phone production, was a massive disappointment. The fact that they charged $1,500 for a device that only received one update of Android is unforgivable. Given this track record, I don’t believe Microsoft deserves another opportunity in the smartphone market.
