The Surprising Connection Between Kid and Neo in The Matrix Revealed!

1999 marked the groundbreaking debut of The Matrix. However, it wasn’t until 2003 that the franchise truly exploded, with not one but three releases: The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and the anime anthology tie-in, The Animatrix. These sequels expanded the universe of The Matrix by introducing several new characters, among them a young human named Kid. Living in the real world’s last stronghold, the subterranean city of Zion, Kid is an ardent fan of Neo from the moment he appears in Reloaded. The reason for his devotion to Neo, which was never fully explained in the Matrix series, remains a mystery that fans have pondered.

If someone hasn’t watched “The Animatrix,” it’s a series of nine anime films that delve deeper into the lore of “The Matrix.” One of these films, titled “Kid’s Story,” specifically focuses on Kid’s journey from within the Matrix to the real world. In this film, we learn about the origins and strong bond between Kid and Neo that is fully explained.

Nestled between “The Matrix” and “The Matrix Reloaded”, the narrative of “Kid’s Story” revolves around a teenager named Michael Karl Popper (whose voice is provided in English by Watson). For some time, Michael has had an inkling that something isn’t quite right in his world. Eventually, he uncovers the truth about the Matrix after encountering Neo in an online hacker forum. The following day at school, Michael receives a warning call from Neo, informing him that the Matrix’s law enforcement agents, known as the Agents, have taken notice of him, and a group is planning to arrest him right at his school.

In the story, Michael winds up cornered on the school rooftop as the Agents pursue him. He manages to escape their grasp by jumping off the roof, only to discover that a funeral is underway for him in the real world, attended by his family, friends, and school authorities in the Matrix. Simultaneously, Neo and Trinity (voiced by Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss respectively in the English dub) acknowledge Michael as the first individual to break free from the Matrix independently, an event they call “self-substantiation,” a feat thought to be unachievable. This paves the way for Michael’s character, renamed Kid, in both The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

Kid’s Loyalty to Neo Makes Much More Sense After The Animatrix

In “Reloaded” and “Revolutions,” the young protagonist idolizes Neo, believing him to be the one who liberated him from the Matrix. However, Neo, somewhat irked by the youth’s persistent pursuit to join the Nebuchadnezzar’s team, tells him, “You sought me out; I didn’t seek you,” and “You rescued yourself.” This dialogue between Neo and the youngster is significant as it mirrors the protagonist’s awakening from the Matrix into the real world in “Kid’s Story,” where he expresses gratitude to Neo for his rescue, and Neo emphasizes that he was the one who saved himself.

In the realm of the Matrix trilogy, I, the young character known as Kid, view Neo differently than others due to my direct interaction with him and the prophecy surrounding him. Had I been rescued from the virtual world by Trinity or Morpheus, I’d still be indebted, but Neo, the bullet-defying legend, drew me into reality. From my perspective, it was this extraordinary man who opened the door to the real world for me. Though I comprehend that Neo merely walked through that door, I see him as the one who showed it to me. For that singular act, Neo will always be my personal hero, a beacon of hope in the fight against machines and for humanity’s salvation.

In the Matrix franchise, it’s not just the kid who admires Neo. A multitude of individuals in Zion display their loyalty towards Neo as he returns as a hero and the prophesied messiah, as depicted early in The Matrix Reloaded upon the Nebuchadnezzar’s return to Zion. Morpheus has long seen Neo in this light, even from his days as a computer programmer Thomas Anderson. Trinity, the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar, and many inhabitants of Zion also view Neo in a similar elevated manner. However, Kid’s connection to Neo is significantly more personal.

From a child’s point of view, Neo isn’t just the man who helped him escape the Matrix, but the one whose advice marked the start of what the child considers as his actual life. The child was the first to achieve self-awareness, but he views Neo as an essential guide in helping him accomplish something that initially seemed impossible. In essence, being guided by Neo towards freedom through self-awareness, the child may even see Neo as having given him a small piece of his power as the One to achieve something that not even Neo himself could do during his own escape from the Matrix.

In “The Kid’s Story” in “The Animatrix,” it is shown that the child’s awakening from the Matrix was a rare and significant event. With this understanding, the child’s hopeful plea of “Neo, I believe” during the final confrontation in “The Matrix Revolutions” becomes more meaningful, as the child sees Neo as a heroic and messianic figure more than anyone else within the Matrix franchise.

The Matrix movies and The Animatrix are available to rent and buy on Amazon Prime Video.
