The Teacher season 2 delivers a harrowing, yet unsurprising ending

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for gripping dramas that delve into the darker corners of society, I must say The Teacher season 2 has truly left an indelible mark on me. The suspense was palpable throughout the series, and the final reveal of Jimmy as the perpetrator was nothing short of chilling.

*Warning: Spoilers for season 2 of The Teacher ahead*

In the second season of Channel 5’s The Teacher that premiered recently, following the tragic murders of Zac and his close friend Sienna, suspicion fell on two main individuals: Matt, a fellow student and friend, and Tim, who was married to Dani.

The close bond between Zac and Matt was strained because Zac attempted to pursue a romantic interest in Jimmy’s son, leading to significant conflict between them. Meanwhile, Matt harbored feelings for Sienna, but she was already involved with someone else and pregnant from that relationship.

Had Matt, overcome with rage, done something unforgivable and irreversible?

Tim disguised his actions by staying home, feigning migraines, yet in reality, he covertly visited the Mallory Centre – the location where Zac was murdered. Meanwhile, Dani found numerous erased messages exchanged between her husband and Zac on his phone.

Was Tim a predator who had an unhealthy obsession with teenage boys, one being Zac?

Initially, both theories seemed valid, but as the story neared its climax, they were both exonerated when the real culprit was unmasked – and no, it wasn’t Headmaster Caulfield, a revelation that would have certainly taken everyone by surprise.

The Teacher season 2 ending explained: Who killed Matt and Sienna?

Jimmy, Matt’s father, a coworker of Dani’s who had been involved in an affair with her and a close friend of Tim’s, was the one accountable for both fatalities.

He had groomed Sienna, a vulnerable student who was living in care, and was also the father of her baby, a secret they’d both tried to protect. But after Zac had spotted teacher and student together in Jimmy’s car a few days earlier, he told Sienna that he was going to tell Dani the truth.

As a film enthusiast, when I discovered my misdeeds were unveiled, I asked Sienna to “silence him,” which led to a heated disagreement and ultimately ended in tragedy. After our dispute, she resorted to striking Zac, fatally hitting him over the head with a stone.

Although Sienna is responsible for her friend’s death, it was really Jimmy’s deceitful influence that set the stage for such a tragic event. Afterward, Sienna herself fell victim to a similar kind of manipulation.

A short time later, Sienna was found dead after being suffocated by Jimmy.

She had met him under the cover of darkness, where they’d argued about her pregnancy. While she wanted to keep the baby, Jimmy demanded that she have an abortion. When she refused, he silenced her permanently.

While it’s a deeply disturbing revelation, it’s also entirely unsurprising.

Similar to BBC’s series The Jetty, which delved into the issue of underage girls being abused in a lakeside town in the North, The Teacher season 2 also sheds light on how sexual exploitation of young women frequently occurs unnoticed and is perpetrated by individuals who appear surprisingly ordinary and far from predatory.

Only when a tragedy occurs do we truly see the real character of individuals such as Jimmy emerge. They conceal their malicious plans, blending seamlessly with the world, while the lives of their victims falter and halt – sometimes irrevocably, in the instances of Sienna and Zac.

As a movie buff, I must confess that Jimmy’s actions were far from admirable, but he’s not the kind of character you’d expect to find lurking in the shadows with a hidden agenda. He’s more likely to be the fellow commuting next to you on the train, the friendly neighbor who offers to look after your cat when you go on vacation, or even your child’s math teacher. In other words, he blends into everyday life, making his true nature all the more unsettling.

Monstrous, yes – but not in the way horror stories would have have you believe.

The Teacher is available to stream on My5.
