What you need to know

  • Springloaded, the developers behind indie management sim Let’s Build a Zoo, have announced the next game currently in development.
  • Let’s Build a Dungeon features the same charming pixel art as Let’s Build a Zoo, putting players in control of their own game developer studio who are working through building an MMORPG.
  • Additional information about Let’s Build a Dungeon will be part of Xbox’s live stream at Gamescom on August 21.

As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in the gaming industry, I’ve seen my fair share of game development studios rise and fall. The latest announcement by Springloaded, the creators of Let’s Build a Zoo, piqued my interest with their new management simulator, Let’s Build a Dungeon.

Are you under the impression that game development is straightforward? Perhaps you believe you could create something superior to what established teams have achieved with popular games? Indie studio Springloaded, famous for their endearing yet ethically ambiguous Let’s Build a Zoo, challenges you to step into the developer’s shoes. Their latest project, a management simulator titled Let’s Build a Dungeon, tasks players with managing their own studio and creating an MMORPG that could captivate the masses.

As a researcher within a burgeoning MMORPG game studio, I grapple daily with the complexities of striking a balance that satisfies all stakeholders – shareholders, staff, players, and our publisher. While positive feedback from players and a content audience are crucial, they alone do not sustain our operations. It’s essential to maintain investor satisfaction, which may prompt tough choices regarding hiring or letting go of team members, decisions that sometimes tread on the edge of morality and ethics.

“The game ‘Let’s Build a Dungeon’ is currently being created by Springloaded, in collaboration with Kowloon Nights, for both Xbox and PC platforms. Notably, Kowloon Nights is an independent gaming fund that has assisted in the financing of notable indie titles such as Spiritfarer, Sea of Stars, and Another Crab’s Treasure, at a period when independent publishing is particularly challenging.”

As a researcher and member of the development team at Springloaded, I’m proud to be part of a studio founded by industry veteran James Barnard in 2012. With over a decade of game development experience under our belts, we’ve been hard at work creating the challenges for our upcoming game, Let’s Build a Dungeon.
