The Testaments Release Date, Cast & Plot Details

Following the conclusion of The Handmaid’s Tale after a challenging six-season run that garnered both acclaim and controversy, everyone is eagerly anticipating the adaptation of The Testaments, a novel written by Margaret Atwood in 2019 with the same title.

The narrative unfolds within the setting of Gilead, however, it has progressed beyond the incidents portrayed in The Handmaid’s Tale, according to the series creator Bruce Miller.

According to Entertainment Weekly, he explained that “The Handmaid’s Tale” narrates the story of a handmaid. This woman was taken away from her previous life and forced to live in the most degrading conditions within Gilead, made to believe she had no worth beyond being a mere vessel for reproduction. Despite this, she manages to retain her humanity and fights against her oppressors.

[Testaments] revolves around an individual who holds a prominent position in Gilead… We discover that she is the daughter of a high-ranking commander, effectively the queen bee among women in Gilead, yet this powerful status does not shield her from the society’s misogyny. Instead, it seems to make her a more conspicuous target.

But what else can we expect?

Read on for everything you need to know about The Testaments.

The Testaments release date speculation: When could it air?

The show went into production on 7th April, so we wouldn’t expect it to arrive until mid-late 2026.

However, this is merely an informed estimation. Since season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale aired about two and a half years ago, it wouldn’t be unexpected if season 6 premiered sometime in the year 2027.

The Testaments cast: Who stars?

Ann Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia.

In this production, she is co-starring with Chase Infiniti portraying Agnes and Lucy Halliday playing the role of Daisy. Interestingly, these characters are actually June’s real-life daughters, known as Hannah and Holly or Nichole on set.

Other cast includes:

  • Rowan Blanchard as Shunammite – “a teen from an important Gilead family whose status affords her a certain level of respect and power amongst her peers”.
  • Mattea Conforti as Becka – “a girl from humble origins who attends school with Gilead’s elite. As she comes of age, she starts to question whether she wants the life she’s being groomed for”.
  • Mabel Li as Aunt Vidala – “a stern disciplinarian and the heir-apparent to the women’s sphere of Gilead”.
  • Amy Seimetz as Paula – “her recent marriage to a high-ranking Commander has raised her social status, but her perfect life is complicated by her new step-daughter”.
  • Brad Alexander as Garth – “a young Commander who becomes involved in the personal lives of the girls he’s sworn to protect”.
  • Zarrin Darnell-Martin as Aunt Gabbana – “a firm proponent of Gilead values and right hand to Aunt Vidala, she is a strict and uncompromising educator”.
  • Eva Foote as Aunt Estee – “the youngest Aunt whose energy and kindness earn her “cool Aunt” status amongst her students”.
  • Isolde Ardies as Hulda – “a guileless girl, full of excitement at the prospect of womanhood. Her frank observations and optimism have earned her loyal friends”.
  • Shechinah Mpumlwana as Jehosheba – “a competitive classmate from a respected family who is relentless in her pursuit of a high-status marriage”.
  • Birva Pandya as Miriam – “a girl on the cusp of womanhood who struggles under the pressure of marriage season”.
  • Kira Guloien as Rosa – “a caring and dedicated Martha, Rosa is a maternal figure to Agnes and a much-needed source of love in an otherwise cold household”.

It is uncertain if Elizabeth Moss, who is also an executive producer, might unexpectedly appear in the project; earlier reports suggested a possibility, but its realization remains to be seen. (Deadline had mentioned ‘hope’ for her appearance, but it’s unclear if this will materialize.)

The Testaments plot: What’s it about?

In the world of Gilead, I find myself 15 years after the events portrayed in The Handmaid’s Tale in the book, but the TV show suggests a timeframe closer to four to five years. My journey unfolds alongside three key characters: Aunt Lydia, Daisy, and Agnes.

For these young ladies, living in Gilead has been their entire experience so far, as they don’t possess any personal recollections of the world beyond it, given that they were conditioned into this lifestyle from a young age.

As a movie enthusiast, I find myself in a situation where I’m about to be wedded off, doomed to a life of servitude. This predicament calls for an urgent quest – a search for friends, both old and new, who might lend their support in our struggle for the freedom we yearn for and the life that truly suits us.

However, it becomes apparent that they too are in a precarious position, much like the Handmaids. As Hannah grapples with the June within her, a strong sense of rebellion surges within her.

Miller also said that through Agnes, we learn more about June.

The aspects of June in Agnes that she can’t hide reveal much about her character. So, as you delve deeper into ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ you gain a more profound understanding of June, for while June is the fuse, it’s the girls who ultimately explode with their struggles.” (via EW)

Her daughter and her daughter’s companions, aided by her, are the ones who ultimately manage to overthrow Gilead, as The Testaments suggests.

Regarding Aunt Lydia from The Testaments, she isn’t officially a member of the uprising, but she’s secretly working to undermine the ruling system instead.

According to Miller (as reported by Deadline), he stated that her ability to maintain control seems to be diminishing due to self-doubt. She’s undermining herself by expressing a desire for control over other women, but then admitting that she feels it’s inappropriate, and she is known for being quite rigid about right and wrong.

However, I believe that the character’s experiences throughout this season suggest a theme: How does someone who thrives on control react when they lose it all? Rather than crumbling, she instead strives for more control as the story progresses and we delve into “The Testaments.

Who is that individual, akin to Lydia, who not only yearns for authority but also possesses self-assurance and proven ability in wielding power? What becomes of such an individual? Simply put, they don’t shy away from the action. If you refuse them and try to suppress them, they might just seize your nation.

Is there a trailer for The Testaments trailer?

Still waiting. Typically, trailers show up a month before the release date, so as soon as we get that information, we’ll have a clearer picture.

But there could be some teaser footage and stills prior to that.
