The Top Supernatural Wrestling Gimmicks RankedThe Top Supernatural Wrestling Gimmicks Ranked

As a lifelong wrestling fan who has seen the industry evolve from its humble beginnings to the spectacle it is today, I can confidently say that no other figure has captivated me quite like Bray Wyatt. Growing up, I was always drawn to the darker, more mysterious characters in wrestling – the ones that made my heart race with anticipation and left me on the edge of my seat.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been hooked on wrestling for years, and I’ve seen how companies like WWE and AEW have consistently tapped into the zeitgeist, including our shared love for all things horror. From the early days of muscular, vibrant heroes to groundbreaking figures like The Undertaker and Bray Wyatt who redefined wrestling with their eerie personas, they’ve taken us on a cinematic journey. As Halloween creeps up on us, I thought it would be fun to share my picks for the top supernatural/horror-inspired wrestling gimmicks from both WWE and AEW, all neatly arranged for your enjoyment.

10. Abadon

In a distinctive twist among contemporary wrestling personalities, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) performer Abadon stands out with an exceptionally original character. Compared to many others in the AEW roster, Abadon’s appearance – featuring vibrant hair, facial jewelry, and striking makeup – is far from generic.

9. Danhausen

Live, laugh, love that Danhausen.

Despite some labeling Danhausen as merely a campy, contrived character, there’s no denying his popularity. Over the past five to six years, attending any event where he appears, you’ll find long lines for his meet and greets. His merchandise flies off the shelves quicker than it can be produced. There seems to be a magnetic pull towards him that attracts not only dedicated fans but also casual viewers and those new to wrestling.

8. Kane

Kane’s initial phase was arguably his most impressive. During the late 90s, when he would assault spectators reminiscent of scenes from a slasher movie, it had quite an eerie feel back then, similar to horror legends like Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, or even Leatherface. His narrative with The Undertaker was as captivating as any movie plot, and the Brothers of Destruction were an indomitable and unforgettable tag team, largely due to their awe-inspiring presence.

7. Papa Shango

In the early 2000s, WWE didn’t quite hit the target with Boogeyman, but Papa Shango’s character was infinitely more compelling. His rivalry with The Ultimate Warrior, where he placed a curse on him and made him bleed from his skull, would send shivers down any child’s spine. After all, if he could do that to someone as powerful as The Ultimate Warrior, imagine what he might do to us ordinary folks! And his voice was absolutely chilling!

6. Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn

There’s something enchanting about a captivating tale of witches, and that was true even before the emergence of Agatha All Along. Before her, there were Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn – a dynamic Scottish duo who have caused quite a stir in WWE since their debut. Known as The Unholy Union, they’ve been sparking interest among fans ever since their time in NXT. Although their main roster performance has been somewhat underwhelming so far, they’ve added a new member to their coven lately. With a hint of supernatural power, it’s not unreasonable to think that a witchy stable might succeed.

5. The Brood

In the 90s, there was a strong interest in vampires within popular culture, from movies like “The Lost Boys” and “Interview with a Vampire”. Capitalizing on this trend, WWE introduced a faction of vampire wrestlers that included Gangrel, along with two newcomers who later became WWE Hall of Famers – Edge and Christian. While not revolutionary, it was a hit among fans and played a significant role in launching their careers. Additionally, many people underestimate Gangrel’s skills as a wrestler in the ring.

4. Mankind

Throughout his illustrious career, Mick Foley has undergone several transformations in character. The emergence of Mankind undeniably played a significant role in shaping him into the icon he is known as today, given that it was a stark departure from his earlier personas and fan expectations. Unlike the gruff, hard-hitting brawler adored by fans as Cactus Jack, Mankind was decidedly eerie – lurking in boiler rooms, emitting blood-curdling pig noises during matches, which sent chills down spines.

3. The Wyatt Sicks

It’s clear throughout that Wyatt was exceptionally skilled in wrestling, even if not everything he did was successful. During a period when WWE was having trouble engaging fans, he introduced something fresh and distinct. Despite the tragic loss, his memory continues through the Wyatt Sicks faction, which is led by his brother and fellow wrestler, Bo Dallas.

2. Undertaker

Initially, The Undertaker wasn’t as popular as he is now. During his debut, fans were more enamored with wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, Bret Hart, and Shawn Michaels. However, his unique “spooky” character was still a novelty in the world of wrestling at that time. Over the years, his mesmerizing in-ring presence helped transform the landscape of professional wrestling by introducing more supernatural elements.

1. Bray Wyatt

Leaving out a horror-themed roster of wrestlers would be incomplete without acknowledging the remarkable creativity of the late Bray Wyatt. Towards the end of his career, he delved deeply into the realm of the eerie. He demonstrated to WWE management that audiences craved something unique and fresh by unveiling The Fiend, the Firefly Fun House, and Alexa Bliss assuming the role of Sister Abigail.
