As a long-time fan of Peter Dinklage’s work, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and frustration when it comes to his latest project, “The Toxic Avenger.” The man is a genius, and his performance in this film was nothing short of brilliant during its festival premiere. Yet, here we are, nearly a year later, still waiting for a release date.
Actor Peter Dinklage, famously known for his role in Game of Thrones and holding an Emmy award, is now promoting his upcoming film The Thicket, set to hit theaters next week. During this promotional tour, he has been answering questions regarding another project, The Toxic Avenger. This long-awaited reboot had its festival premiere at Fantastic Fest last year and was well-received, boasting a 92% approval rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Regrettably, since its premiere, there’s been no news about the film’s release date. In an interview with Collider, Dinklage provided a humorous response when asked about the movie’s release schedule.
Dinklage shared: “My friend Macon Blair, the writer-director of ‘Toxic Avenger’, also stars as Malachai in ‘The Thicket’. It’s always a pleasure to work with him; I’d be eager for every film if given the chance. Here’s hoping it hits theaters soon,” Dinklage added, jokingly suggesting, “Write to your congressmen.” “I’m not sure what else to do in this situation.”
More recently, Dinklage shared an unfortunate development concerning the upcoming film “The Toxic Avenger,” during his conversation with ComicBook.
“I’m not involved in the production, but I don’t know when The Toxic Avenger will be released,” Dinklage said in response to the question about its release date. “However, I really hope it gets a chance to be seen by everyone because it was hugely popular at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and Macon Blair, who wrote and directed it, is amazing. He’s one of my favorites, so I’m crossing my fingers that it will shine in the toxic light.”
At the beginning of the page, you’ll find our interview featuring both Nikolaj Cukor (Dinklage) and his co-star from “The Thicket”, Juliette Lewis.
What Is The Toxic Avenger About?
The character “Toxic Avenger” hails from a lengthy series developed by the iconic B-movie production company, Troma. Here’s a brief summary of the movie:
In contrast to the original film from 1984, Macon Blair’s modern adaptation focuses on a massive, deformed creature played by Peter Dinklage, who transforms into “The Toxic Avenger” after an encounter with toxic waste. Unlike Melvin Ferd Junko III from the original story, Winston Gooze, our downtrodden janitor protagonist, evolves from a regular guy to a toxic hero in this reimagining. This contemporary version is deeply immersed in environmental themes as Winston combats the malevolent forces of greed and corruption, aiming to protect his son, friends, and community.
Although this tale maintains its unique identity, there’s no doubt that it preserves the essence of the original. Fans of Troma, both veterans and newcomers, will be thrilled to learn that the movie has been given an R rating for violence and gore – a characteristic typical of Troma productions.
In an earlier conversation with Empire, Dinklage expressed that the upcoming film isn’t a remake, but rather he appreciates the style of guerrilla filmmaking. These movies were simply created, regardless of quality. Some may not be excellent, but others are incredibly enjoyable. When films become too polished, it can create a sense of detachment for viewers. Instead, they crave an authentic, gritty experience. The Troma films, in particular, immerse the audience in a toxic environment, which is exactly what he believes this style offers.
