The Traitor in Justice League Unlimited Is Going to Break Your Heart

As a lifelong DC fan with a soft spot for the underdog heroes, I must say that Justice League Unlimited #1 was a thrilling rollercoaster ride! Mark Waid and Dan Mora truly outdid themselves, crafting an intriguing tale that left me eagerly anticipating future issues.

Everyone DC enthusiast eagerly awaited the arrival of “Justice League Unlimited” ever since the announcement of DC All-In. In its debut issue, writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora truly delivered, leaving readers intrigued for more narratives. The initial installment immediately ignites anticipation, showcasing the new Justice League in action while presenting the team’s latest addition – Air Wave II, who played a significant part in defeating Amanda Waller in “Absolute Power.” Air Wave was previously a secondary character, often appearing in Justice Society comics; however, this is his chance to shine.

In this fresh phase of the Justice League, there’s a strong resemblance to the old “Justice League Unlimited” animated series, meaning there will be numerous characters joining and leaving the team. However, Air Wave stood out; the story focused heavily on him and even let him provide narration. Air Wave seemed poised to become the standout character from “Justice League Unlimited”; he was instrumental in making the issue’s crucial save. Yet, the final page unveiled a surprising twist: Air Wave was actually an adversary; secretly working with enigmatic enemies intent on utilizing him to bring down the universe’s mightiest heroes.

Air Wave Is A Legacy Hero With An Impeccable Pedigree

Air Wave, originally introduced in Detective Comics #60 back in 1942, was a law clerk named Larry Jordan in his civilian life. He utilized technology to grant himself radio-based abilities, taking on foes ranging from common street thugs to Nazis. As a member of the All-Star Squadron, he fought alongside other original Justice Society members and Golden Age superheroes. After retirement, he met an untimely end. Larry had a son, Harold, who shared his radio-powered abilities, often referred to as Hal, much like his second cousin Green Lantern Hal Jordan. Due to Larry’s association with the All-Star Squadron, Air Wave II was usually linked to the Justice Society. Prior to the events of “Absolute Power,” he was abducted by the Childminder, who had taken custody of the Lost Children – forgotten sidekicks and offspring of Golden Age superheroes. While held on an island, his age was accelerated artificially, and he was eventually freed by Stargirl together with the rest of the Lost Children.

In the period of Absolute Power, the freshly youthful character known as Air Wave would secretly reside within Fortress Solitude among other heroes. His unique radio abilities enabled him to transmit signals even when Waller and the Department of Sovereignty controlled the airwaves. This proved instrumental for Nightwing and Mister Terrific, who utilized it against them. With Air Wave’s broadcast, he exposed Waller admitting to her heinous crimes, restoring public trust in heroes once more. This pivotal moment marked one of the greatest achievements in Air Wave’s superhero career, propelling him into the League and earning him a spot on their team. His first mission with the League was defending a South African town from the new adversary Inferno, where Star Sapphire required assistance locating an injured man’s spouse for her healing ritual. Air Wave facilitated this by tapping into everyone’s cell phones to find the woman. Both Absolute Power and this mission underscored Air Wave’s potential as a great hero if given the opportunity. However, his subsequent betrayal in revealing himself as a traitor was heartbreakingly poignant, making his elevation to the big table truly deserved.

Air Wave’s Betrayal Is Going To Hit The League Hard

The Justice League Unlimited marked the beginning of a new phase for the superhero community, as they emerged stronger than before after overcoming Waller’s challenge. United in their goal to protect the world, they owed much of this success to Air Wave. Had it not been for him, the public would have remained ignorant of Waller’s true motives behind her assault on superheroes, and their trust in these guardians would still be shattered. Air Wave managed to accomplish what others could not, securing his rightful place within the League. His subsequent act of saving Star Sapphire’s life merely served as a testament to his exceptional character.

Air Wave’s revelation was particularly shocking because he had achieved something significant, moving beyond just being an ally of the lower tier Justice Society of America (JSA). This made him an ideal choice for the reader’s character in Justice League Unlimited, a sort of underdog who managed to secure an invitation to the big event. However, learning that he was there to bring harm to the Justice League is a devastating blow on multiple levels. Here’s hoping Air Wave can dodge this tragic fate and pull off another heroic act to save the day. Given his recent track record of overcoming odds, it wouldn’t be surprising if he found a way to escape whoever wants him to harm the League.
