If you were to ask horror aficionados which TV show encapsulates the genre most effectively, many would likely single out “The Twilight Zone,” which enthralled audiences for more than six decades. Each monochrome episode of “The Twilight Zone” was a self-contained story, allowing viewers to enjoy one episode without worrying about the narrative continuing in the next. Some of these distinctive features are being carried over to the upcoming reinvention of “The Twilight Zone.

In a continuation of the legendary TV show’s legacy, IDW Publishing’s horror imprint IDW Dark is launching “The Twilight Zone” as an anthology comic book series. Each installment in this collection will be structured like individual episodes, offering self-contained tales that can be enjoyed separately for a satisfying read. Additionally, each issue will be printed in chilling black and white to mimic the original small screen version. Renowned comic creators will contribute captivating stories to this series.

The debut issue of “The Twilight Zone” will originate from Dan Watters, known for “Batman: Dark Patterns”, and Morgan Beem, recognized for “Swamp Thing: Twin Branches”. According to Watters, “The Twilight Zone” stands alone as a genre. It’s a towering cultural icon and a beacon in the strangest skies, showing us what science fiction, fantasy, and horror are capable of – revealing uncomfortable truths about ourselves. Our story aims to tap into this vein; the unsettling area between anger and unease that has always been the domain of “The Twilight Zone”.

Beem shared, “For a long time, I’ve been drawn to horror stories, but the ones that gradually unsettle you are my favorites. Few series have managed to evoke this feeling like The Twilight Zone. These stories create an atmosphere similar to being stuck in a dream fever or navigating through a threshold, manipulating the sense of unease and discomfort as things seem out of place. In our story, Dan has skillfully captured this sensation that I hope will permeate the artwork. It may not scare you, but it might linger in your mind during the darkest hours.

The upcoming issues will showcase creators Tom Scioli, James Stokoe, Nate Powell, and Francesco Francavilla. As a child, Scioli expressed his dream of writing a story for The Twilight Zone, questioning whether he had the ability to do so. Scioli pondered, “How does one create a classic like The Twilight Zone?” The television series introduced one of comic book’s established formats – sci-fi/horror anthologies with literary aspirations, twist endings, and a social conscience. It challenged the boundaries of commercial television, and now we aim to test the limits of the comic book medium to its very edge and discover what lies beyond. With such towering standards in mind, Scioli has crafted something he hopes will receive your approval.

Series co-editor Ellen Boener remarked, ‘Just like me, anyone who yearned for additional installments of the original series will enjoy these comics.’ We’re blending the nostalgic charm of the silver screen with the profound human emotion portrayed in the TV show. Every aspect, from the monochrome design to the interconnected covers and narrative style, is a tribute to the series. Each issue offers a unique entry point into an extraordinary dimension, led by some of the most brilliant minds in comic creation. I’m thrilled to reveal the discoveries these creators have made.’
