As a researcher, I’ve been noticing that everything seems to be an Xbox nowadays, but if you’re in the UK and seeking an actual Xbox Series X console, your search might turn out to be quite challenging. It appears that stock of the original console is scarce outside Microsoft’s official site, which could make it difficult for potential buyers to find what they’re looking for.
However, this isn’t just a problem with availability, but also with perception. Reports on social media suggest that there’s a widespread stock issue, and upon checking the biggest UK retailers myself, I found these claims to be accurate.
What is going on with Xbox Series X console stock in the UK?
While this list doesn’t include every possible UK store selling the Xbox Series X, it does feature the major ones where most people would shop. Interestingly, the PlayStation 5, which was hard to come by earlier in the console generation, appears to be easily accessible at all these retailers. Why hold off until February for an Xbox when you can grab a PlayStation today?
How are stocks looking in the US for the Xbox Series X?
In the United States, it’s simpler to locate the digital version, whereas the physical Xbox Series X version is increasingly hard to come by.
Not a good look for kicking off 2025
The vibe among Xbox fans is quite tense right now. People are divided over Microsoft’s “Everything is Xbox” campaign, seeing it as a departure from their usual focus on console gamers. Add to that the fact that the Xbox Series X is hard to find when the PlayStation 5 is readily available, and it looks bad for Xbox. To make matters worse, the upcoming Developer Direct event will feature new games and updates, but who are these announcements for if people can’t easily buy the Xbox Series X? In addition, countries like Saudi Arabia, Poland, Germany, and others have reported issues with finding Xbox Series X|S consoles recently. Last year, Microsoft even had to deny rumors that they were planning to withdraw from the Middle East market.
One hypothesis I had was that Microsoft is focusing on optimizing production to emphasize digital-first hardware, thereby encouraging gamers towards its Game Pass and cloud services. However, the scarcity of the Xbox Series X 1TB White All-Digital Edition in the UK challenges this idea. Alternatively, it’s possible that Microsoft is diverting Xbox Series X|S silicon to its cloud platform rather than retail consoles. The Xbox Cloud Gaming service operates on Xbox Series X|S chips, and high demand for Xbox Cloud Gaming resulted in queues during the holiday season. One would expect Microsoft to satisfy both cloud-based and home console demands if there is indeed a desire for both. Since the consoles are out of stock, this suggests that there may be a market for them.
In recent times, Microsoft’s hardware performance has been under close examination due to regular quarterly decreases. However, could these declines be merely the result of supply shortages instead? If so, Xbox could have a promising year ahead. Unfortunately, the scarcity of its consoles in the market may drive away potential customers. For parents or casual buyers, the decision often boils down to what’s easiest to obtain—and at present, that’s the PlayStation 5. Whether this shortage is deliberate stock management, or a consequence of supply chain troubles, one point remains clear: for gamers seeking consoles with disc support, Sony’s product is more readily available among the two options.
