In contemporary cinema, horror has emerged as an incredibly lucrative genre, captivating both seasoned fans and new spectators alike. By the year 2025, this trend is expected to swell even more, boasting a packed schedule of releases designed to cater to various preferences. Ranging from remakes, literary adaptations, and original productions, the upcoming year seems primed to deliver an assortment of styles for those craving thrills, chills, or even profound psychological terror. Following the sensational debut and impressive success of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu during Christmas last year (and receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback), anticipation for forthcoming horror projects has never been greater.
2022’s January is shaping up nicely, with some fantastic new releases on the horizon. Make sure not to blink, as you won’t want to miss the standout picks we’ve curated just for you!
The Monkey
Fans of Stephen King who haven’t experienced an adaptation since “Salem’s Lot” last October now have something fresh to look forward to: “The Monkey”. Directed by Oz Perkins, this movie revolves around twin brothers Bill and Hal, who stumble upon an antique toy monkey in their attic. What initially appears as a harmless artifact soon reveals itself as a catalyst for a series of disturbing occurrences and senseless deaths whenever the monkey claps its cymbals. As the brothers grapple with understanding these strange events, they are forced to confront hidden family secrets connected to the toy. This upcoming film blends horror with comedic elements while maintaining an atmosphere of high tension and graphic violence reminiscent of the ’80s-’90s.
In this production, you’ll find actors like Theo James, Christian Convery, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Colin O’Brien, and more. The movie titled The Monkey is scheduled for release on the big screen starting February 21st.
The Ritual
Title “The Ritual” aligns with psychological horror productions, catering to a particular audience segment. Viewers fond of “The Exorcist” will find themselves drawn to this fresh offering. The narrative delves into profound inner struggles, giving depth to spiritual strife that dominates the narrative. Directed by David Midell, the plot revolves around two priests, each with distinct viewpoints: one grappling with his faith and the other burdened by a troubled past. As they navigate their differences, they are compelled to confront their personal demons in an attempt to save Emma Schmidt, a young woman under possession. This quest takes them on a perilous path through various exorcism rituals.
The lineup for this movie features Al Pacino, Dan Stevens, Ashley Greene, Abigail Cowen, Patricia Heaton, among others. The film titled “The Ritual” is scheduled for release in theaters on April 18th.
Sinners
A psychological horror film titled “Sinners” directed by Ryan Coogler will hit the screens this year. This chilling tale revolves around twin brothers Elijah and Elias, who attempt to escape their tumultuous pasts by returning to their hometown with dreams of a fresh start. However, they stumble upon an even more sinister evil lurking within, compelling them to confront their darkest fears and unhealed wounds. Although the film caters to vampire enthusiasts, it primarily focuses on the suspense and tension rather than the supernatural creatures themselves.
I’m excited to be a part of an impressive lineup featuring Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and more in the upcoming movie “Sinners.” We’re set to make our debut on the big screen starting April 18th.
Until Dawn
Stepping into the realm of original horror flicks, I’m all geared up for the chilling thrill ride that is “Until Dawn”. Unlike its video game counterpart, this movie offers a unique narrative that hasn’t been told before. For those who crave a dose of ’80s nostalgia, this film promises to deliver an intense and suspenseful atmosphere reminiscent of classic slasher movies. The mastermind behind the camera is none other than David F. Sandberg, and he has crafted a tale centered around a protagonist named Clover, along with her friends, who embark on a quest to find her missing sister, Melanie, in an isolated valley. However, their search takes a terrifying turn as they encounter eerie supernatural occurrences and a masked murderer. This night of horror repeats itself over and over again until our heroes finally make it through until dawn.
In this production, you’ll find Ella Rubin, Maia Mitchell, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Odessa A’zion, Belmont Cameli, and Peter Stormare as part of the stellar cast. The thrilling movie Until Dawn is set to premiere on April 25th.
28 Years Later
2025 is eagerly awaited by zombie genre enthusiasts as it marks the release of the third installment in the 28 Years Later franchise. This film, set to grace our screens, is expected to be ominous and suspenseful. It will not only depict survival but also delve into complex themes such as morality and the boundaries of human nature in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Danny Boyle directs this story that unfolds nearly three decades after the “Rage” virus outbreak, with survivors inhabiting an isolated island in Britain. The narrative takes a turn when one survivor decides to venture onto the mainland, unveiling unspeakable horrors.
In this upcoming movie titled “28 Years Later“, you’ll find a talented ensemble featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding, alongside other notable actors. The release date for the film is scheduled for June 20th.
Honorable Mention: Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” is tentatively scheduled for a 2025 release, though no specific date has been confirmed as of now. It’s anticipated that this film will be shown in cinemas and on Netflix.
Fans have eagerly anticipated the upcoming adaptation of “Frankenstein” since its announcement, given the scarcity of details released since then. Set against the backdrop of Mary Shelley’s original novel, the narrative shifts focus to Dr. Pretorius, who aims to locate Frankenstein’s monster, thought to have perished 40 years ago, in order to carry on Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s scientific endeavors. The movie is set to showcase a Gothic atmosphere – characteristic of Guillermo del Toro’s filmmaking style – and an introspective examination of the ideas of creation and annihilation.
This ensemble features Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, along with a few more talented actors.
