It’s safe to say that “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” which first aired on Nickelodeon in 2005, is often hailed as one of the best animated series ever produced. In today’s era of streaming, it continues to draw repeated viewings from its dedicated fan base. Although most fans feel there are no weak episodes within the show (even considering the recap episode “The Ember Island Players”), certain episodes are particularly noteworthy throughout the three-season saga of “Avatar.
Among the listed episodes, some stood out due to their influence on the series’ narrative as a whole. Others were included because they showcased exceptional moments of creativity. However, what truly sets each and every one of these episodes apart is their remarkable ability to leave an indelible impression. Here are the top 10 memorable episodes from Avatar: The Last Airbender:
10. The Crossroads of Destiny (Season 2, Episode 20)
In the Season 2 finale titled “The Crossroads of Destiny,” the show reached a pivotal moment. Although Aang had achieved several significant wins against the Fire Nation prior to this episode, it was here that we truly witnessed the might of the Fire Nation. With their conquest of Ba Sing Se and the Dai Li, Azula confronted Aang in a battle that almost thwarted his quest to restore harmony among the nations.
This installment showcases the breathtaking combat sequences that make Avatar: The Last Airbender stand out. However, many viewers will recall it as the episode where Zuko made a treacherous move against Uncle Iroh in his desperate bid to win back his father’s favor and reclaim his title as Prince of the Fire Nation.
9. Appa’s Lost Days (Season 2, Episode 16)
Witnessing the human characters in “Avatar: The Last Airbender” endure emotional and physical suffering is undeniably sad; however, observing such hardship befall an animal is overwhelmingly heart-wrenching. Episodes like “Appa’s Lost Days” are frequently pointed out as some of the show’s most emotionally taxing, and for a good reason.
This episode centers solely around Appa’s trek to Ba Sing Se, which occurred after his abduction by the Sandbenders during the season. Viewers had greatly missed this endearing character throughout Season 2. However, his reappearance on screen was more heartrending than anticipated. The mastery of the episode lies in conveying Appa’s emotional turmoil and his fear that he might never see Aang again, without a single spoken word.
8. The Firebending Masters (Season 3, Episode 13)
Nearly every enthusiast of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has had an image from this episode serving as their wallpaper at some stage. “The Firebending Masters” stands out as one of the most visually impressive episodes in the series, perhaps even in the entire franchise that includes “The Legend of Korra.” Furthermore, it was a crucial moment in Zuko’s journey towards redemption, as Aang gradually came to recognize his true heroic qualities.
While the Gaang is yet to fully trust Zuko, the transformed Prince of the Fire Nation, he leads Aang to an ancient tribe of Firebenders for instruction. To endure this encounter, they need to master the Dancing Dragon technique. This dance brings them into close contact with the original Firebenders, leaving both characters in awe. The dance sequence was groundbreaking, causing a collective gasp among viewers, and the climactic episode animation was breathtakingly beautiful.
7. The Blue Spirit (Season 1, Episode 13)
The process of Zuko’s redemption was already underway without many viewers noticing initially. In the action-packed episode, “The Blue Spirit,” there are clear nods to martial arts film legends such as Jackie Chan. It is during this storyline that Aang gets saved by a masked, enigmatic figure – blue in color – after being captive under Zhao and the Yuyan Archers.
Delving into the realm of anime fandom, I can’t help but be captivated by the iconic Zuko’s Blue Mask. This mask wasn’t just a trendsetter for countless Avatar tattoos, but it served as a subtle clue that there was a depth to Fire Nation Prince Zuko that wasn’t immediately apparent. Known as “The Blue Spirit,” this alter ego paved the way for one of the most compelling redemption stories in literature.
6. The Puppetmaster (Season 3, Episode 8)
In a series designed for a younger demographic, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” occasionally delved into profound darkness. While some might point to the genocide of an entire nation as its darkest moment, we contend that the episode titled “The Puppetmaster” is even more disturbing.
This episode introduced the group, Team Avatar, to an ancient Waterbender who created her own extraordinarily potent method called Bloodbending. The narrative unfolded like a spine-chilling short movie, with an unusually gloomy color scheme and eerie character development. Hama, the first Bloodbender, caused widespread fear among children worldwide when this episode initially premiered.
5. Zuko Alone (Season 2, Episode 7)
Although ‘The Blue Spirit’ might have set the stage for Zuko’s path towards redemption, it was ‘Zuko Alone’ that truly cemented his journey. While this episode is often considered a standout, other episodes (listed below) hold more weight in our opinion, as Zuko’s redemption storyline is one of the most memorable aspects of the Avatar series.
In “Zuko Alone,” the story focuses on Zuko being separated from his Uncle and the dominating presence of the Fire Nation. This seclusion allowed viewers to see Zuko’s genuine, valiant character as he shielded a family from an Earth Kingdom under attack by renegade soldiers.
4. The Tales of Ba Sing Se (Season 2, Episode 15)
From my perspective, it’s easy to label “The Tales of Ba Sing Se” as filler content. However, upon closer inspection, this seemingly disconnected and everyday-life focused episode offers more character depth and revelation than some series manage in an entire season. This episode takes us through the daily lives of each main character in Ba Sing Se, providing a unique glimpse into their personal journeys.
Certain amusing scenes, such as Toph’s excursion with Katara, served to make the powerful Earthbender more relatable and earthbound. On the other hand, Uncle Iroh’s narrative continues to resonate with fans for over a decade, just like the timeless tune, “Leaves From the Vine.
3. The Southern Raiders (Season 3, Episode 16)
Within the Avatar fanbase, Katara is frequently the subject of jokes due to her tendency to preach, deliver passionate speeches, and frequently bring up her mother. However, keep in mind that when Katara takes center stage, the resulting episode is sure to be a standout.
In the episode “The Southern Raiders,” Katara found herself facing a difficult moral dilemma when Zuko led her to the Fire Nation captain who had killed her mother. Would she succumb to the desire for revenge or choose the path of forgiveness, even though this man had caused her years of anguish and sorrow? This episode demonstrated that “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was far more than just a children’s show.
2. The Seige of the North: Part II (Season 1, Episode 20)
Many viewers would likely concur that the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered less intricate compared to Seasons 2 and 3, as it seemed to find its stride during those seasons. Moreover, Toph was absent from Season 1, which is a notable point. However, despite these observations, Season 1 remains impressive and culminated in one of the most epic and memorable battles in the series.
In “The Siege of the North: Part II”, we witnessed the immense might of the Avatar State as Aang annihilated the Fire Nation’s troops. This installment also featured one of the most heart-wrenching deaths in the series, underscoring that “Avatar” was not just your typical kids’ show. Alas, Yue gave up her life to save the world, which is truly a tough blow. Oh dear!
Honorable Mention: The Cave of Two Lovers (Season 2, Episode 2)
Two star-crossed lovers, kept apart by conflict… The episode ‘The Hidden Lovers’ wasn’t our best, but it deserves recognition for the memorable tune performed by wandering minstrels. Be prepared to find yourself humming it all day long: “HIDDEN TUNNEL! HIDDEN TUNNEL! Through the mountains! Secret, secret, secret, hidden tunnel!
1. Sozin’s Comet – Part 4: Avatar Aang (Season 3, Episode 20)
Lessons from ‘Game of Thrones’ remind us that even if your series is the best in the realm, a botched ending can tarnish all the efforts put into the journey. Fortunately, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ managed to nail its finale and surpassed expectations.
The final installment of “Sozin’s Comet – Part 4” concluded an extraordinary series that had spanned over three seasons. This captivating episode culminated in the much-anticipated battle between Fire Lord Ozai and Avatar Aang, as well as a confrontation between Zuko and Katara with Azula. Not only was it visually stunning, but it also presented Aang with a moral dilemma about how to handle Fire Lord Ozai’s defeat.
