The Umbrella Academy Cast Reflect on Filming Final Scene

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the worlds of various TV shows and comics, I must say that the finale of The Umbrella Academy was an emotional rollercoaster. Watching the Hargreeves siblings sacrifice themselves to save the universe was a bittersweet moment that even caught the actors off guard during filming.

As a dedicated gamer diving headfirst into the captivating world of The Umbrella Academy, it’s been two weeks since our epic journey drew to a close with its gripping fourth and final season on Netflix. The adrenaline-fueled adaptation based on Dark Horse Comics had only six episodes left to wind up the storyline, yet it managed to tie up countless loose ends in ways that even die-hard fans might not have foreseen. In a climactic battle against the cosmic threat posed by Ben and Jennifer merging into a colossal beast, our team made the ultimate sacrifice – self-destruction – setting the universe on course for redemption.

It’s not a moment that fans saw coming, and for the cast members it was an unexpected, and weird one to carry out. Speaking with ComicBook in an interview for the final episodes, we asked them all about the actual filming of that final sequence, and how they felt in that moment.

David Casta?eda (Diego Hargreeves): “I believe each of us had our unique perspective on what that sensation was. Some appeared deeply emotional, while others seemed more accepting. Personally, I found myself questioning reality and wondering if I should be feeling much more distressed given the situation…”

As David Castañeda, the actor portraying Diego: “While performing that final scene, I found myself questioning, ‘Is this truly the end?’ It was a strange mix of emotions as I tried to comprehend the gravity of the moment, and surprisingly, it didn’t feel overly sad.”

Elliot Page, who plays Viktor Hargreeves, expressed, “The reality of it truly sank in during ADR sessions, especially when recording that last scene. It struck me then that this was the final goodbye as Victor, and I was returning to work with such a talented group and many crew members we’ve worked with for decades. The realization hit me again later too, as I believe we are just so fortunate to have four seasons, and as Justin mentioned earlier, going into the fourth season knowing it is our finale, and we’re creating something that hopefully offers the closure fans are seeking.”

Tom Hopper (as Luther Hargreeves): “Ending it that way seemed perfectly fitting, both for us as performers and our characters. It was a deeply emotional scene. We filmed it during the dead of night too.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on Robert Sheehan’s portrayal of Klaus Hargreeves. That final scene was so poignant… It felt like a subtle fourth wall break, merging the characters we know and love with the real people behind them. In that moment, it seemed as if Klaus and the rest of the Hargreaves siblings were expressing feelings they’d never dared to share before – emotions that were too sincere, too genuine for the characters to articulate in the past. It was a powerful testament to the bond between them, a heartfelt goodbye that resonated deeply with us all.

All four seasons of The Umbrella Academy are now streaming on Netflix.
