As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of watching superhero shows under my belt, I must say that The Umbrella Academy season 4 has truly outdone itself. This series has been a rollercoaster ride since its debut in 2019, and this final chapter is no exception.

*Warning: Full spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 6.*

Get ready to bid farewell to the Hargreeves siblings, because The Umbrella Academy’s fourth season is now here!

These characters – Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H Min) and Viktor (Elliot Page) – made their debut on our screens five years back, specifically in the year 2019.

Now that Season 4 has premiered on Netflix, our troupe of imperfect superheroes have once again saved the universe, albeit at a tremendous price. Interestingly, the actors themselves confessed that the feelings portrayed in the climactic moments were genuine and heartfelt.

Ritu Arya, the actress playing Lila, shared: “I was absolutely overwhelmed! It was incredibly challenging for me. But let me tell you, I adore this cast and this series. Therefore, conveying emotions wasn’t difficult; it felt genuine.”

In the fittingly named finale episode, The Umbrella Academy’s season 4 unfolded its series of events.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 ending explained: Why did the Hargreeves siblings sacrifice themselves?

The Hargreeves siblings chose to disappear, as their very presence was fracturing the initial timeline. This selfless act erased them from history.

Pondering this, I wondered, if they vanished without a trace, would anyone remember them at all? What was their true identity? And does our affection for them remain unchanged?

As someone who has spent a significant portion of my life pondering the mysteries of existence and the impact we leave behind, I find myself often asking philosophical questions about the significance of our actions and the legacy we create. A question that constantly intrigues me is: how would people feel if their deeds went unacknowledged by the world?

Let’s analyze what transpired recently. After his CIA confrontation, Diego is viewing his marriage differently – yet, due to Lila and Five’s relationship, does it seem they’ve missed their chance? Diego and Luther make their way home for Christmas, but Lila is conspicuously absent. Following seven years of time-traveling adventures, Lila and Five come back home, and Lila meets up with Diego and their kids again. It’s evident that Five is distressed by these encounters.

Simultaneously, Viktor and Reginald (Colm Feore) encounter Ben and Jennifer. Trying to halt The Cleanse, Viktor persuades his father not to shoot them right away. They then engage in talks with Jean (Megan Mullally) and Gene (Nick Offerman) to retrieve Ben and Jennifer. However, since Abigail (Liisa Repo-Martell) is disguised as Gene, their conversation begins to seem a bit unusual, with Gene arguing with Reginald. As we peek inside the structure, it swiftly becomes apparent that Ben and Jennifer are undergoing rapid mutation into monsters, caused by the durango within Jennifer mixing with the marigold in Ben.

Viktor manages to persuade his father to grant him a conversation with Ben. He disguises himself as a Guardian and infiltrates their group, then slips into the structure covertly. However, he’s discovered during the act, but employs his abilities to eliminate one of the Guardians trying to halt him. Upon encountering Ben, Viktor finds him drastically altered, with protrusions where his skin used to be.

He insists he won’t leave Jennifer and, as Viktor attempts to convince him, his voice distorts, making it clear that he’s turning into something that’s not quite Ben Hargreeves any more.

Victor tells Ben that The Cleanse is affecting him and Jennifer negatively, and being around each other will only worsen things. As Reggie calls Victor, Ben uses his tentacles to push Victor aside. Ben demands that Victor and his siblings depart, stating he can’t manage his condition and doesn’t wish to harm them.

In this scenario, Victor tries to seize control over something called Durango from Ben. During this attempt, he experiences a vision of a beautiful, verdant park. This vision turns out to be Ben’s effort to demonstrate the original timeline and instruct his brother on what needs to be done. Subsequently, Reginald’s sharpshooters fire at them, with Viktor being saved from harm by Ben who takes the bullet intended for him. As events unfold, Ben and Jennifer encounter a monstrous creature called The Cleanse, which is poised to consume everything in their world.

Additionally, Klaus, Allison, and Claire (Millie Davis) show up at Diego and Lila’s household, having just been rescued from Klaus being buried alive. Luther informs the group that it is crucial they locate Ben and Jennifer (Victoria Sawal) before the Keepers do. Diego becomes suspicious of a connection between Five and Lila, and they discuss their past encounters in the subway, explaining why they eventually decided to stop hiding. Diego then queries Lila about her feelings for Five, but she doesn’t have time to respond as they spot Ben’s location being displayed on TV.
