As a devoted cinema enthusiast with over three decades of viewing under my belt, I must say that Steve Blackman’s approach to The Umbrella Academy‘s season 4 finale has piqued my curiosity. Having traversed through numerous series finales, some leaving me contentedly satisfied and others leaving me yearning for more, I find myself eagerly anticipating the reactions of fellow fans.
In The Umbrella Academy season 4, as we bid farewell to the Hargreeves siblings forever, showrunner Steve Blackman is anticipating that some viewers might strongly dislike the way he concludes the series.
He commented that this season was exceptionally grand, and he believes the final episode, being our costliest to date, will make for an incredibly impactful conclusion.
I believe various perspectives might emerge among the fans – some could adore it, others could dislike it intensely, while still others may offer constructive criticism. Regardless, I’m eager to listen to what they have to say about it.
Blackman commented: “However, I’m genuinely pleased with the conclusion. I believe it’s the fitting conclusion. Yet, the choice of whether it’s suitable for this family is open-ended, allowing each viewer to make their own decision.”
In their own words, the showrunner shared: “The opinions of the viewers carry significant weight for me. I understand it’s impossible to please everyone. Our goal is to make choices that some fans will adore, while others might find disappointing.”
Of course, our primary focus is always on the fans. The writers and I have this shared goal: to craft an engaging, emotionally charged narrative for them. We aim to provide a captivating, forward-moving plot that leaves them fulfilled by the end of each day.
A few spectators are puzzled as to why this particular season consists of only six episodes instead of the usual extended length seen in past seasons.
Blackman explained that initially they considered creating additional episodes, but later decided with Netflix on six. At first, six seemed adequate, but due to some extra content in mind, there was a need for condensing the storyline. However, as it turned out, six proved to be just the right amount.
“Is it possible that we could have accomplished even more? Indeed, yes, but I personally believe that the six achievements we currently have provide a fitting conclusion for this season.”
Blackman openly acknowledged that he wept while penning the script, expressing: “It’s truly heart-wrenching [to bid farewell]. It’s incredibly sad. I shared countless memorable moments with these talented actors, the crew, and the writers, so I was well aware that our journey would eventually conclude. However, I didn’t anticipate feeling this emotionally.”
Reflecting on the final script’s concluding scene, I recall a moment when I felt, “This will be the last time I write these characters.” My eyes brimmed with emotion as I bid farewell.
The Umbrella Academy seasons 1-3 are streaming now on Netflix.
