The Umbrella Academy showrunner reveals spin-off idea: ‘Gerard Way has thoughts’

As a devoted cinephile who’s traversed countless story arcs and bid farewell to numerous beloved characters, I can wholeheartedly say that The Umbrella Academy has left an indelible mark on my heart. The final season was a rollercoaster of emotions, and the post-credits scene was like a beacon of hope in a stormy sea.

Although the Hargreeves siblings said their goodbyes at the end of the fourth season, which was the last one, showrunner Steve Blackman hasn’t completely closed the door on the possibility of their return to the series, or even a separate spin-off.

The last episode decisively shaped the destiny of our beloved, quirky family (with just a hint of optimism hinted at in the closing scene), yet Blackman hints that this may not truly mark the conclusion of their tale.

I truly fervently wish that The Umbrella Academy series doesn’t conclude and that the world of The Umbrella Academy continues. There are certainly many untold stories involving different characters, not only this particular family.

“It’s my belief that Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, its creators, may also be pondering about its continuation. Here’s to hoping it’s not over yet; only time will tell.”

Regarding his preferred concept for a spin-off series? “Without a doubt, there are plenty of untold tales at the Commission, and I’d be thrilled to discuss more about Hazel and Cha Cha’s unfinished business. There’s a wealth of material, in fact, I have quite a few ideas brewing.”

Alongside the cast, there’s an eagerness for the series to return, as Ritu Arya (Lila’s actress) expressed, “I can’t get enough of portraying Lila. I adore her.”

Number Five actor Aidan Gallagher added: “I agree, there’s a lot of places the characters can go.”

In a statement, Robert Sheehan, known for his role as Klaus, expressed, “We should always keep an open mind; ‘never’ might not always hold true!” To which Tom Hopper, who stars as Luther, appended, “It would be Steve leading the way, yet we can’t rule out the possibility of the band reuniting someday.”

Blackman himself confessed that penning the last script for the series left him in tears, sharing: “It’s incredibly difficult [to part ways]. It’s truly heartbreaking. Working with these actors, the crew, and the writers was an incredible experience, so I knew the end would come, but I didn’t anticipate feeling this emotional.”

Reflecting on the final scene of the last script, the climax, I found myself musing, “I won’t be crafting these characters anymore.” My eyes brimmed with emotion at that thought.
