The Umbrella Academy Stars React to "Bittersweet" Ending

As a fan who has been on this exhilarating rollercoaster ride since the very first season of The Umbrella Academy, I must say that the fourth and final season was nothing short of a masterpiece. The bittersweet ending left me with a mix of emotions, much like the characters themselves. The reunion of Patrice Goodman (Dot), Ken Hall (Herb), and Jordan Claire Robbins (Grace) was a delightful surprise, adding a touch of nostalgia to the poignant finale.

In the recently released finale of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, we find that the only solution to permanently save the world is for the Hargreeves family to vanish from existence. As they accept their destiny, the series concludes with an ordinary day in a park, filled with characters from the show’s past, including Kate Walsh as The Handler, The Swedes, Cameron Britton’s Hazel, and others. At the beginning of the final season, ComicBook had exclusive interviews with Patrice Goodman (Dot), Ken Hall (Herb), and Jordan Claire Robbins (Grace), who returned for a poignant farewell scene. We also conversed with Tom Hopper (Luther Hargreeves) and David Casta?eda (Diego Hargreeves) regarding the bittersweet ending. Be cautious, as there are spoilers ahead!

“Goodman shared that she hadn’t read the final script when asked about her first reaction to the show’s conclusion. It was kept so confidential that she never had a chance to review it. Instead, she was told to appear at an unspecified location on a certain day. Upon arrival, she noticed that there were no familiar faces in the makeup trailer. Later, Ken and she were escorted out, and someone explained the situation to them. They both found it deeply moving.”

She mentioned that we consistently felt as if we had a special place within the show, almost as though we were right at its core, and I was genuinely touched to have been part of it on that specific day.

Hall said, “I found it incredibly heartwarming,” adding further. “It’s a thoughtful approach, in my opinion, to bring an end to four fantastic seasons. It truly gives fans a satisfying conclusion and serves as a tribute to everyone who has contributed to the show. I feel honored to be asked back, and the moments we share are quite emotional for me.”

“I love the serendipitous nature of it, that it sort of came together last minute,” he added

Robbins expressed, when questioned about the series finale, that it was both poignantly sweet and slightly bitter. She believes it perfectly met expectations, offering a conclusion that is beautifully wrapped up.

“Castañeda expressed feeling profoundly satisfied with the conclusion, and while there’s a tinge of sadness about not returning, it hasn’t fully sunk in yet. However, he’s also looking forward to revisiting it.”

“Tied up the loose ends doesn’t it?” Hopper added.

As a longtime fan of The Umbrella Academy, I eagerly await the final season’s release. Having followed the Hargreeves siblings through their extraordinary journey, it’s fascinating to see how they’ve fared after the climactic battle at Hotel Oblivion. Their lives have taken different paths, some more successful than others, but their connection remains strong.
