The Union: Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg Talk Working Together For the First Time

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the release of The Union on Netflix was a long-awaited treat for me. Having followed both Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg‘s careers since their early days, witnessing them finally share the silver screen in this action flick felt like watching two old friends reconnect after years apart.

Today, “The Union” premiered on Netflix, showcasing an action-packed storyline boasting a renowned ensemble of actors. The film stars Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg, longtime friends for three decades who have never shared the screen before. In this movie, Roxanne (played by Berry) enlists her old high school boyfriend (Wahlberg) to aid her covert organization in completing a perilous European intelligence mission. At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, ComicBook had the opportunity to interview the pair, and we asked about their on-screen chemistry and how it felt to collaborate after so many years.

In simpler terms, Wahlberg stated that the chemistry between them on-screen was what really made their collaboration successful, as the audience seemed eager to see them together. He emphasized that this chemistry cannot be manufactured; it either naturally exists or not. As for his co-star, he praised her authenticity and talent, noting that she is just as remarkable off-screen as she appears on it.

“I’ve known the guy for 30 years,” Berry added. This is the thing I didn’t know I needed.”

We also talked to Berry and Wahlberg’s castmates, who spoke about watching them work together.

Mike Colter found it remarkable to see their on-screen chemistry develop. He added humorously that even though the characters seem like they should have worked together previously, they haven’t, and they are portraying old high school sweethearts. This is intriguing because it’s as if they knew each other from some past life or shared version of themselves. Time has moved on, making them different individuals now. It’s like recognizing someone but not fully knowing them – I know you, but I don’t know you. Yet, I knew you, but now you’ve changed so much. So, the casting choice fits well for that aspect, he concluded.

Jackie Earle Haley expressed that both individuals were incredibly approachable, charismatic, and friendly, and extremely gifted. He admitted to being a fan of both of them. In his own words, he’s just like everybody else – if he sees a streaming option with Mark Wahlberg or Halle, he’s drawn to it. He appreciates and adores them both. The experience of being there to support and watch was fantastic for him, and he believes the part was well-written. They have an excellent chemistry together, according to Jackie, and they were perfectly cast for their roles. Reading the script, he felt that the movie would be exceptional.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje expressed his delight at how down-to-earth and relatable they turned out to be. He noted that they were incredibly close, as if they were the best of friends. Moreover, he commented on the exceptional chemistry during filming scenes, stating that they seemed like seasoned colleagues, which left him deceived in a good way because it suggested they had worked together before.

As a gamer, I was utterly blown away by the incredible dynamic between Mark and Halle on set – it was off-the-charts amazing! The first scene we filmed together left me speechless, honestly. So, when I met them for the first time, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Oh my God, it’s a pleasure to meet you! I can hardly wait to work with you.”

Jessica De Gouw noted that Berry and Wahlberg have a remarkable chemistry on-screen. Their interactions are filled with playfulness, which makes their scenes enjoyable to watch, even from behind the camera. The chemistry between them provides numerous possibilities for directors, as it feels natural and unscripted. It’s evident they’re enjoying themselves while filming, and this joy is clearly reflected in the movie.

The Union is now streaming on Netflix.
