The Voice UK’s new coaching duo Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones: “We’re like Batman and Robin!”

As a long-time fan of The Voice UK, I am absolutely thrilled with the new addition to the coaching line-up! Seeing McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones sharing one chair is like witnessing Batman and Robin in action, only this time, it’s on a rollercoaster ride!

This year, The Voice UK has brought in three fresh faces as coaches, introducing a unique spin to their seats!

It’s clear that LeAnn Rimes has joined the panel of coaches, teaming up with Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones from McFly. However, instead of sitting in separate chairs, these bandmates will share one chair, meaning they’ll need to collaborate to make a joint decision when turning for a contestant.

“He shared that he had watched Danny perform on The Voice Kids a few times at the studio, and it was truly a remarkable encounter,” he described.

“It was quite a special moment for me since it was our first time seeing the double chair in the UK. Danny and I have been performing together for about 21 or 22 years, so sitting next to him, my longtime collaborator, felt like a unique chance to share an extraordinary experience.”

Though they’re clearly enjoying themselves, this pair is equally eager to discover the next major breakthrough, whomever that person might be.

Tom commented: “I’m hoping that we’ll discover some exceptional vocalists, and if we do, we’ll provide them with a fantastic stage where they can demonstrate their talents to the world.”

For more than twenty years, this duo has collaborated closely, and soon they’ll be seated even more intimately – in a generously sized armchair.

For the very first time in the UK, duo Tom and Danny will jointly occupy a combined chair setup, resembling what you might picture: Sitting on two chairs that have been fastened together, they described it as being similar to riding a carousel – and it certainly appears enjoyable!

Explaining the creation of the chair, Tom said: “It’s literally like [we’re] Batman and Robin!”

He explained: “We crafted an exceptionally unique double rocking chair, and it’s quite extraordinary how it rotates because unlike a regular single chair where you’re centered during rotation, when we spin, we’re on the edge like a rollercoaster, similar to a Waltzer ride.”

In simpler terms, “We have two seats and a single button. To avoid being impolite during the performance of an artist or contestant, we must communicate our intention to press (the button) without speaking verbally. Instead, we can use mental communication, facial expressions like eyebrows, and actions to express ourselves.”

Nevertheless, were they always in agreement, and what was their process for making collective decisions? To be honest, it wasn’t always a smooth sailing experience.

“Trust, in part, should come from our mutual relationship and your intuition. Despite our many commonalities in music preferences, Danny and I share a connection.”

However, equally there are musicians that would “appeal more to Danny” and vice versa.

He went on to say: “In a sense, you have faith in your significant other, so if they’re drawn towards someone else, you follow suit. The same applies to you. It was quite intriguing discovering this dynamic.”

“But ultimately, there’s people who are just so undeniably talented that we both leap for [the button] pretty instantly. If there’s people that really speak to that.”

Despite occasional disagreements over music tastes, being fellow songwriters enabled them to appreciate what was considered ‘quality’ in various genres, even when it wasn’t their personal preference.

“I think that’s where that was our kind of strength,” said Danny.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself in agreement with another viewer regarding the character Tom. Having him around was like an unspoken alliance, a silent ally ready to stand beside me. It added an undeniable sense of security and camaraderie to the experience, making the journey through this film feel less daunting.

On Saturday, 31st August, the boys are set to appear on the screen, marking the beginning of The Voice’s 2024 season. There’s a lot to look forward to, particularly the moment when the coaches decide to belt out a tune!

The Voice UK airs Saturday 31st August at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
