In the decomposition phase after death, rotting bodies produce gases such as methane. However, during filming of The Walking Dead, one zombie surprisingly let out some gas on set, an event actor Ross Marquand, who played Aaron for seven seasons on the AMC zombie series, claims may be a first for The Walking Dead: a flatulent zombie.
In summary, the episode “The Distance” in season 5 found Aaron guiding Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira), and Glenn (Steven Yeun) to his home, Alexandria. After their car with bloody traces collided into some walkers and stopped, Aaron, still tied up, became anxious and fled into the forest. As Michonne extracted dismembered limbs from the car’s grille, Glenn got separated from Rick and Michonne. Eventually, Glenn came across Aaron who was defending himself against a hungry walker by pushing it away with his back against a tree trunk.

At the lively Awesome Con in Washington D.C., I shared an amusing anecdote about my most hilarious experience working on “The Walking Dead”. It revolved around a particularly gas-filled zombie!
Marquand stated that he found himself surrounded by a walker in the heart of the forest, and this happened right after we’d finished our meal. He added that the meals served there were extraordinary. The catering was top-notch, and we had all indulged ourselves with an abundance of delicious food.
Additionally, it was a professional stuntman who wore a protective padding on his abdomen. Since my hands were bound, I had no choice but to kick him. Strangely enough, each time I kicked, he let out the loudest, most persistent farts you can imagine.
Marquand chuckled, remembering that the scene we shot couldn’t be included in the final cut. I double-checked this with our boom operator at the time, Cooper Andrews – who later became a member of the cast, portraying the character Jerry.
On that particular day, our sound technician was none other than Andrew. Interestingly, Jerry, who’s known for his role in The Walking Dead, used to be our sound guy before he became an actor. A little trivia there! As I glanced at him, I jokingly questioned, “This isn’t usable, right?” He chuckled and replied, “No, it can’t be.” We had to momentarily halt production and ask, “Do you need anything? Do you need to use the restroom?” To which he replied, “Sorry, man, I just had a large meal.” So, that was undoubtedly the most amusing incident on set.
Marquand also used this occasion to ponder over an intense scene from Yeun’s last episode. In the seventh season episode titled “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,” Glenn met a gruesome end at the hands of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character, Negan. Using a bat coated with barbed wire, Negan mercilessly killed Glenn.
During breaks, Marquand recollected, Steven’s eyeball appeared to be hanging loose from his skull. “Don’t you remember those whiffle balls we used to play with?” he described. “His eyeball was bobbling about as he spoke. It was almost like asking, ‘What’s next?’ He replied, ‘I think I’ve landed a new role on Voltron [Legendary Defender], I’ll be doing some voiceover work.’ I jokingly replied, ‘Could you please keep still for a moment? I might vomit [laughs].
Marquand remarked, “That was incredibly unpleasant to look at,” but he gave kudos to the visual effects crew for making those disturbing scenes seem genuine.
