The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan shares cut scene from Dead City premiere

Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, known for his role in The Walking Dead, discussed a cut scene from the first episode of Dead City’s second season. This scene underscores the significant progress made by his character since his grisly introduction.

In the realm of the sci-fi horror series, Morgan portrays Negan – a character who initially emerged as one of the series’ most formidable antagonists. He swiftly killed off Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun) in a short span during his early episodes.

Nevertheless, the character has persisted for nearly a decade following that period, revealing a more compassionate aspect over time and transforming into something resembling an antihero. The comic series “Dead City” serves to underscore this evolving trajectory.

In the heat of a gang conflict within Manhattan during season 2, Negan’s character grapples with the unsavory remnants of his past, finding himself compelled to reawaken his aggressive nature yet again. This includes encountering a modernized replica of his iconic baseball bat.

Yet, an omitted scene, as described by Morgan (through Deadline), showcases Negan’s deep internal struggle, where he makes desperate efforts to resist being drawn back into the shadows.

In my film critique, I remember a surprising omission – a pivotal moment where, for reasons unknown to me, I symbolically discarded the bat across the set, signifying a character’s long-standing struggle to break free from Negan, shedding the oppressive label of being his enforcer.

His old baseball bat, which he calls Lucille, along with his leather coat bring back memories of Negan for him. He’s striving diligently to change himself or distance himself from such associations – a persona he developed during the apocalypse.

Morgan went on to say: Now they’re pressuring him to revert back to that person, but he’s resisting. This is a more natural way of expressing the original sentence.

Towards the finale of the initial series, he’s attempting to reinvent himself and distance himself from that chapter in his life. In this storyline, he’s forced into assuming a role he rejects, offering an intriguing challenge for him as an actor.

In the continuation of my admiration, I embark on sharing that “The Walking Dead: Dead City” carries forward the voyage of the original series character Maggie, portrayed by Lauren Cohan. Here, she finds herself entangled in the struggle for New York City’s control during season 2. The show makes its comeback to the UK shores next month.
