Having binge-watched the first season nearly two years ago, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia whenever I see those familiar images of the Brannock family’s dream-turned-nightmare home.
According to the lead actress Naomi Watts, it seems like we have a while before we see “The Watcher” season 2.
Nearly two years back, the initial season unfolded, focusing on the Brannock family as they relocate to their ideal residence, only for it to transform into a terror when they began getting ominous letters from an unknown source.
Drawing inspiration from real events, this series took creative liberties with the details, featuring a star-studded cast such as Jennifer Coolidge, Margo Martindale, Mia Farrow, and Richard Kind, who brought to life some intriguing characters.
Despite receiving a relatively moderate response from critics initially, the show went on to become a significant success for Netflix, leading them to expand its limited series status by ordering a second season. However, since that time, there has been minimal news regarding the project’s progress.
During a chat with Entertainment Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival, Naomi Watts shared updates about the progress of The Watcher’s second season – however, the news wasn’t favorable for its enthusiasts.
She said, “If there’s any news, I don’t have it. I wish I did.” And about the enjoyable event we discussed earlier, she mentioned, “I don’t have new information to share, I’m sorry.
In simpler terms, although Watts continues to work closely with Ryan Murphy, the creator of The Watcher, she had been uncertain about reprising her character, Nora Brannock, from before.
In an interview with EW in January, she stated: “To tell you the truth, we stepped out of our house, and I’m not certain if we’ll return. I’m unsure about the plan there, so I can’t provide a clear answer, unfortunately.
As a cinephile, I’ve been pondering over the possibility that the creative minds behind The Watcher – Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Eric Newman – might decide to transform this series into an anthology, inspired by the success of shows like American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Netflix’s Monsters. It would be quite intriguing to see a unique take on this concept!
