As a long-time comic book fan and collector, I’ve had the pleasure of reading some truly exceptional works throughout the years. Among those that stand out is the groundbreaking manga “Dororo” by Osamu Tezuka. With Kaneko taking on this classic tale, I’m confident that we’re in for a thrilling ride that will continue to resonate with readers and push the boundaries of storytelling. Having grown up with Tezuka’s work, I can only imagine what it must feel like for newcomers to discover his enduring legacy through this exciting adaptation.

In our weekly feature, The Weekly Pull, the ComicBook crew shares their most anticipated picks for another exciting week in the comics world. These may come from major publishers or independent presses, debut as new issue installments of ongoing series or original graphic novels, or represent collected editions of older works. Whether they feature superheroes, other genres, or a combination, if these comics ignite our enthusiasm for the medium this week, you’ll find them discussed in The Weekly Pull.

As a long-time comic book enthusiast with a deep appreciation for both indie and mainstream publishers, I’m thrilled to share my excitement about this week’s releases! For those who have not yet discovered the captivating world of “Skyward,” a compelling reason to give it a try lies in the talented creative team behind “The Big Burn” #1: writer Joe Henderson and artist Lee Loughridge. If you’ve missed out on “Skyward,” consider this a two-fold recommendation as Henderson and Garbett make an electrifying duo poised to deliver another must-read DSTLRY series this week. Their new concept follows the story of Owen and Carlie, a pair of individuals who seem destined for failure, having sold their souls to the devil in order to regain their freedom after a long history of criminal activities. With their souls now in the hands of the devil, one might wonder what more they could aspire to achieve after getting away with so many misdeeds unscathed? The answer: orchestrating a daring heist to reclaim their stolen souls from the depths of hell. This intriguing premise is sure to appeal to fans of horror, crime, and romance comics alike. DSTLRY has been making waves in 2024 as the publisher to keep an eye on, expanding upon various genres and their intertwining fusion in “The Big Burn” from a team of Eisner Award-nominated creators holds just as much promise as every successful DSTLRY series before it. — Paraphrased by me, Samantha.

Some comic enthusiasts, including myself, were taken aback when Oni Press revealed their plan to revive EC Comics and introduce a new series under that name. With the debut of “Epitaphs From the Abyss” #1, Oni Press has a chance to quell doubts and showcase their creative team’s talent in the horror genre. As an avid reader of anthology stories, I am optimistic that Oni’s EC Comics will honor the legacy. — Jamie Lovett

The influence of Osamu Tezuka on the manga world is significant. Atsushi Kaneko’s “Search and Destroy,” now available in English through Fantagraphics, explores this legacy by adapting one of Tezuka’s classic works, “Dororo,” into a high-octane thriller. Previous mangaka have successfully reinterpreted Tezuka’s creations, such as Naoki Urasawa’s “Pluto,” which transformed a beloved “Astro Boy” storyline into a suspenseful sci-fi tale. Given Kaneko’s unique artistic approach, there is strong potential for “Search and Destroy” to become the next major addition to Tezuka’s body of work.
