The long-awaited “New History of the DC Universe” provides readers with the official chronology of Prime Earth within the expansive DC Multiverse. For over four decades, the history of DC Comics has undergone numerous revisions, beginning with the groundbreaking “Crisis on Infinite Earths” (1985-1986). This storyline eliminated the DC Multiverse and significantly altered DC history, leading to further changes in DC’s narrative. These alterations have caused confusion for various characters and stories, leaving many fans to create their own interpretations of DC continuity until this book was published.
The New Chronicle of the DC Universe” #1 Spans from Time’s Dawn to Silver Age Comics Events
“The New Chronicle of the DC Universe” #2 Launches with the Introduction of Several DC Characters, Giving Robin a Notable Mention in the Narrative. Robin, as Batman’s initial partner, was a beacon of light amidst the grimy backdrop of Gotham City. However, his vibrant costume often drew attention, making it stand out starkly against the nocturnal gloom of Gotham, considering that Batman and Robin usually operate under the cover of darkness. Interestingly, this eye-catching outfit shares a purpose with Batman’s own bright yellow one.
Robin Was a Walking Target
the yellow on his chest. For a long time, many fans found this color choice peculiar because Batman’s suit is designed to blend with the darkness. But upon further examination, it turns out that the yellow was strategically placed for a specific reason. The idea was to attract gunfire towards the bat-symbol on his chest, which is where he could sustain damage without serious harm due to its larger surface area compared to other parts of his body. This tactic allowed Batman to endure shots and subdue criminals. Moreover, it contributed to his myth, making him appear invincible in the eyes of his enemies. However, this strategy seems questionable when applied to Robin’s suit.
The yellow on Batman’s chest has been a topic of debate among fans due to its contrast with his dark suit. However, it was later discovered that the yellow served a tactical purpose—to draw enemy gunfire towards the bat-symbol. This area is where Batman could take damage without much harm because of its larger surface area compared to other parts of his body. By enduring shots here, he could subdue criminals and maintain his invincible image in the eyes of his enemies. However, this strategy appears problematic when applied to Robin’s suit.
Robin’s attire typically consists of a mix of colors that contrast starkly with the gloomy grandeur of Gotham City. Unlike Batman, who can blend into the shadows effectively, Robin’s vibrant costume has often been a subject of humor among Batman enthusiasts, suggesting he might attract unwanted attention from criminals. However, Robin’s agility and acrobatic skills, especially demonstrated by Dick Grayson, have allowed him to evade bullets effectively.
The concept of Robin has always seemed somewhat puzzling. It appears questionable for Batman, who doesn’t typically involve untrained minors in his crime-fighting exploits, to bring a young, inexperienced boy like Robin into the dangerous underbelly of Gotham City. However, “The New History of the DC Universe” #2 sheds some light on this apparent irresponsibility, suggesting that Batman was acting with some level of caution.
Much like Batman’s iconic yellow bat symbol, Robin’s cape is designed to withstand bullets, providing an additional layer of protection for the young crime-fighter against Gotham City’s thugs.
Robin Was Much Safer than Anyone Would Have Guessed
In plain terms, it’s clear that Batman isn’t as responsible as he may seem by taking Dick Grayson, a young boy, into crime-fighting as Robin. After all, Robin is a minor in a vibrant costume; despite Dick’s exceptional agility, he relied heavily on luck. The Joker’s minion merely needed one lucky strike. DC has a hero known as the Human Target, but Robin essentially lived up to that name. Yet, discovering that his cape was bulletproof adds a layer of responsibility to the situation.
As a dedicated fan, I’d rephrase it this way: Robin’s bulletproof cape provides full protection for my torso, and I can only assume that Batman taught him to utilize the cape as both a weapon and shield. This enables Robin to stay secure in even the most challenging situations. However, while I believe Robin has grown under Batman’s guidance, it’s hard not to question some of his decisions, especially since they don’t seem as reckless as they used to appear.
