The White Lotus: Jason Isaacs & Parker Posey Explain Their Accents

Jason Isaacs has checked into The White Lotus.

A former star from the “Harry Potter” series, now seen alongside Parker Posey in the third season of HBO’s show, has shared insights about his method for portraying Southern businessman Timothy Ratliff through accent adaptation.

The Englishman noted in a TikTok video dated February 15th that he had to go to Durham, N.C., which may sound familiar due to its resemblance to other Southern accents. However, he pointed out that there are two vowel sounds in it reminiscent of upper-class English, making it unusual for those unfamiliar with the local dialect, as only residents can truly appreciate it.

The 61-year-old commented, “I’m fond of accents. Throughout my life, I’ve developed numerous accents myself, and it’s always my voice that initiates this.

How did Posey decide on Victoria Ratliff’s accent? She tapped into her deep-rooted Southern heritage.

In an interview with Variety, published on February 17th, she explained that she wanted to come across as somewhat pretentious. She’s encountered many affluent individuals and Southerners who affect a certain air of sophistication, which is why she chose to do the same.

She went on to say, “I found it incredibly enjoyable to perform. The flair is reminiscent of Southerners, and being from the South myself, I took pleasure in channeling the dramatic style of Tennessee Williams’ works like ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’. It was truly an exceptional experience.

However, although Isaacs and Posey relished their accents as the new season approached, many fans of “White Lotus” were reluctant to endorse the contents of their characters’ luggage.

One user on X commented after the Feb. 16 episode, ‘I appreciate Parker Posey, but her accent seemed out of place and didn’t enhance the character.’

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I recently came across an intriguing observation that sparked my curiosity: someone drew a parallel between the distinctive drawl of a certain ‘Dazed and Confused’ alum and the hilarious Southern parody by comedian Meg Stalter, which went viral. In a recent post to X on February 16th, they humorously remarked, “It’s reminiscent of Parker Posey adopting a Southern accent in ‘The White Lotus’.

While certain fans expressed criticism, many others wholeheartedly approved of the pair’s acting decisions.

One user commented on February 16th that only those who haven’t encountered individuals similar to Parker Posey and Jason Isaacs in their real lives should refrain from criticizing their accents in ‘The White Lotus.’ They suggested that these people should keep quiet about matters they don’t fully comprehend.

As an ardent admirer, I must express my sentiments about Parker Posey’s acting in White Lotus. In a recent post to X on Feb 16th, I exclaimed, “Parker Posey’s accent in #WhiteLotus transcends the realms of good and bad. It’s not just an accent; it’s a character in its own right. It’s like a piece of modern art. You may not fully grasp its intricacies, but you acknowledge that some elements of this universe are destined to remain enigmatic.

However, prior to his Thailand adventure, he had already starred in another series focusing on a wealthy beach-going family: “The Perfect Couple”, where he portrayed Will Winbury, the son of Greer and Tag Winbury, characters played by Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber respectively.
