The White Walkers’ Chilling Secrets Revealed

The globally popular series “Game of Thrones,” boasting eight seasons and the title of the most-watched show worldwide, did a commendable job in bringing George R.R. Martin’s books to life (despite some missteps in the final season). With a movie upcoming and additional spin-offs following “House of the Dragon,” the series’ intricate plotlines and characters continue to shine brightly in our memories. Among these, the villains are particularly noteworthy; however, we’re not discussing the ruthless Cersei Lannister, the cruel Joffrey Baratheon, or the brutal Ramsey Bolton. Instead, the main antagonists of the story, the ones that the narrative had been leading towards from the beginning, were the formidable White Walkers.

In the series, the narrative delved further into their backstory using Bran Stark’s visions; however, in the books, this aspect remained less detailed. Many viewers find themselves needing more clarity on the White Walkers, questioning their true nature and just how formidable a threat they are. So, who are these entities? What is their role? Who is the Night King? And does their story connect to the events unfolding in House of the Dragon?

Who Are the White Walkers in Game of Thrones?

In the sixth season of “Game of Thrones”, it’s revealed that the White Walkers were originally crafted by one of the oldest races in Westeros, the Children of the Forest. These ancient beings created them as a defense against the First Men, who were the first humans to settle in Westeros about 12,000 years before the series begins. However, their creation disrupted the balance and lifestyle of the Children of the Forest significantly, leading them to take such drastic steps. The process of creating the White Walkers involved stabbing a First Man with dragonglass, but this initial creature rebelled and became the Night King. From him, an army was born that eventually gained its own autonomy, breaking free from any control and transforming into the White Walkers we see today.

Previously considered mere folklore, the White Walkers are striking figures resembling icy undead beings, easily identified by their captivating blue eyes that glow with an otherworldly light. Hailing from the frozen lands north of The Wall, they indiscriminately wreak havoc on everything and everyone they encounter. Yet, it was not until the Free Folk crossed paths with them that the White Walkers truly became a pressing matter of concern. Throughout the narrative, Jon Snow takes it upon himself to warn all, advocating for the importance of preparing for war against the White Walkers before settling disputes over the Iron Throne.

The White Walkers, with their powers over weather, freezing capabilities, and distinctive skills like resurrecting both people and dragons, make them formidable adversaries that are hard to defeat. To kill them, one needs weapons either forged from dragonglass or Valyrian steel. Arya Stark was the one who successfully eliminated the Night King, resulting in the downfall of his entire army. Yet, regarding the White Walkers generally, there is more speculation and enigma than concrete facts.

Despite the conclusion of “Game of Thrones”, the origins and true intentions of the White Walkers remain a mystery. Characters like Melisandre and Bran hinted at a deity called the Great Other, an adversary to the Lord of Light, who they believe the White Walkers serve. They aim to undermine the new ruler of the Six Kingdoms because he transformed into the Three-Eyed Raven, effectively halting human history. This indicates a form of retaliation against life and mankind, yet the specific reasons behind this are still unspecified. Since the Children of the Forest appeared clueless about the potency of the magic they utilized to create the White Walkers, there’s clearly more to the narrative waiting to be explored. Could additional insights emerge in future productions set within the same universe?

The Possibility of a Return of the White Walkers in the Game of Thrones Universe

What drives the Night King’s intense hatred for humanity? And what led to the selection of the man who would become him? Additionally, why were the White Walkers seemingly forgotten and then resurfaced after thousands of years to bring destruction? These are some of the unanswered questions that continue to baffle fans of Game of Thrones. Despite the fact that the Night King and his army were vanquished, there remain too many plot threads left hanging for the story to be fully concluded. Intriguingly, House of the Dragon suggests this complexity when Daemon Targaryen experiences visions following a touch with a Weirwood tree in Harrenhal during Season 2’s finale.

Through this sequence, the link between the White Walkers and the Targaryens grew more apparent. Although it seems improbable they’ll feature in the spinoff, given its focus on the civil war known as “Dance of the Dragons,” there remains a possibility that we’ll uncover additional details about them. In Season 1, Aegon the Conqueror’s prophecy was disclosed, hinting at the Targaryens having a significant part in the ultimate conflict against the undead. Might House of the Dragon delve deeper into this connection in the future?

It’s important to mention that certain spin-off series set in the Game of Thrones universe have been axed, such as one focusing on Jon Snow’s backstory. Yet, it remains uncertain whether this project will definitely not occur, and if it does, it could offer more insights into the White Walkers. Speculating, there’s a possibility that the Night King might not truly be dead or that others like him may still exist, given their magical origins and his power to resurrect the deceased. If future developments delve deeper into these creatures, anything could be speculated.

The idea of a series titled Bloodmoon, solely dedicated to the White Walkers, was contemplated but unfortunately ended up as another abandoned HBO production. For now, it seems that fans must settle with what they currently have – unless George R. R. Martin decides to complete “The Winds of Winter,” which might offer more insight into these intriguing characters.

Game of Thrones is available to stream on Max.
