The Winter King axed by ITVX after one season

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of immersing myself in the rich tapestry of historical dramas, I must say that the cancellation of The Winter King leaves me feeling somewhat disheartened, much like the unstable kingdom ruled by our beloved King Arthur in the series.

ITVX has decided to discontinue “The Winter King,” a historical drama series adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s acclaimed book trilogy, “The Warlord Chronicles,” following its debut season only.

Under the guidance of Iain De Caestecker from Agents of SHIELD, the series chronicled King Arthur’s reign over a tumultuous land, transforming him into a “war master” during the 5th century.

As a passionate reader-turned-moviegoer, I was eagerly anticipating “The Winter King,” having been a devoted fan of the novels. However, upon its release, I found myself quite disappointed by the critical response. The Guardian branded it as “medieval rubbish,” while Forbes described it as a “massive letdown.

As a true cinema enthusiast, I must say that the general response to this series feels quite subpar, judging by the Rotten Tomatoes’ ‘Popcornmeter’. This tool gauges viewer reactions at home and, unfortunately, it’s showing a rather disheartening 41% positivity rate.

The program, reworked by executive producers Kate Brooke and Ed Whitmore, managed to secure a nomination in the Best Drama category at the 2024 Broadcast Digital Awards, as it turned out.

The termination, as reported by TVLine, is expected to be disappointing for the cast and crew alike, given that The Warlord Chronicles offer numerous untold stories that could have been explored further by the series.

The cast was certainly star-studded – with the likes of Stuart Campbell, Ellie James and Nathaniel Martello-White joining De Caestecker – and the leading man even had the seal of approval from Cornwell himself.

During an interview on The Winter King podcast, the writer shared that he hasn’t personally met the show’s principal actor. However, he believes the actor is a great fit for the main role and commended his performance. Additionally, he expressed his approval of the series’ diversity, which has faced criticism since its premiere.

Cornwell went on to discuss the similarities and differences between The Winter King and another adaptation, The Last Kingdom. He highlighted how Arthur, from The Winter King, contrasted with Uhtred, the main character of The Last Kingdom: “A key aspect I aimed to emphasize in my writings is that there was no historical ‘King Arthur.’ In other words, the records provide no evidence that he ever held a kingship.

In the tales and screen adaptations, I’m often referred to as a warlord, a battle commander. Yet, in truth, Arthur, as portrayed in the stories, is more than just a warrior. He’s a contemplative warrior, always thinking deeply before he acts. And he carries a great sense of responsibility, making him not only a formidable fighter but also a wise and respected leader.

Cornwell further explained, “Uhtred’s duties differ from those of Arthur. Uhtred is mainly loyal to Bebbanburg and his tribe. Unlike Arthur, he isn’t burdened with choices that could alter the destiny of an entire nation.

It’s worth noting that the television adaptation of The Winter King, titled “The Witcher,” didn’t achieve the same level of success as its Netflix version, which spanned five seasons between 2015 and 2022.
